We are saddened to report that Kuky, one of the African elephants living at Buenos Aires Ecopark, passed away this morning; she lived at the ecopark for 31 years, both with Pupy, a fellow African elephant, and Mara, currently living at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. For those of you wondering how Mara is doing today, she was a little bit quieter than normal this morning. She and Rana came by the barn to get their daily treatments done. Generally, Mara is making some commotion in anticipation of getting her session started. Today, she walked over to the Itchy Scratchy Tree and slept with her head against it for about an hour. Afterward, she remained quiet but eventually started talking and engaging with those around her. We’ve seen similar reactions in other elephants in the past. We can’t be sure what Mara knows, but she seems to understand that something has transpired. As you may remember from past elephant deaths at sanctuary, when an elephant passes away, a necropsy is performed to determine the cause of death. These results can take weeks to months. The ecopark has temporarily closed while Kuky is examined. We don’t have any further details at this point, but will share information as it becomes available. To celebrate #WorldElephantDay we're promoting the Great Elephant Migration, organised by our friends at @elephantfamily . This symbolic herd of 100 elephant sculptures are migrating across the US to promote coexistence, raising funds to support projects across the world.

#WorldElephantDay acts as a reminder of the challenges elephants face. Over 600 elephants are currently living in captivity across Europe and here at Pangea we are committed to working with zoos, circuses and governments to offer a home to those most in need.
