“Rather than choose this subpar life in a country that has erected systemic blockades to prevent immigrants from succeeding in their professions, we decided to leave. I respect myself too much to stay.”

So, after explaining why I was doing this, I opened the conversation to the class. I let them share: a) The types of questions they hated; b) General reactions c) The things they wish we had done prior to the exam to help them study. I listened as the students opened up. 🧵

Why would I do something that opens me, a young female professor, up to the unfiltered commentary of an enormous class of angry students? Because fostering a safe and mutually respectful environment in which students feel heard & valued is essential to my teaching philosophy.🧵

Do I know anyone, or can anyone recommend, someone who I could invite to speak (online) at a panel for Grad Students with Disabilities? The topic is something like "navigating academia with a disability." #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter
