I’m rereading Geoffrey Hill’s Mercian Hymns (1971) this morning. They’re much parodied, but they really are stunning; proof, however inconvenient, that the prose poem exists. (Does anyone recognize the quote in the second stanza? Is it, knowing him, something from e.g. Ruskin?)

Five lessons. I can do three-point turns. Got beeped at for the first time.

Four driving lessons. Getting better and driving on real roads. Got cut up by a minivan with a big sticker on the back window that said Christ Is King.

I have now had two driving lessons and can drive with only moderate levels of panic around small roundabouts.

Finished reading The Mirror and the Light. Cried a lot. Just the most astounding, astounding trilogy.

The thing about printing is that you learn a huge amount from the disasters. I know this to be true. But I also know that half an hour ago I had an almost complete forme, and now I have a heap of pied type and no Christmas card.

(Don't worry about.....any of it, especially the furniture. It's a work in progress!)

Well it is a very grey and Mondayish sort of Monday, but I do have some very shiny new type.
