@DanaPalubiak Jen is not the child's mother. Getting the child to school on time is not the teacher's job.

78 tardies. Jen is outraged. At least he came. He could have stayed home. The system isn't broken because kids are late. It's broken because teachers like Jen would rather tweet about it than figure out why and help him overcome.

My spicy take for the day: sarcasm has no place with students. Yes, even high schoolers and especially middle schoolers

Admin: we know teachers hate xyz event, but we think the kids deserve it, so we're going to do it anyway. Also admin: why is everyone calling out on the day of xyz?

@FixingEducation As soon as you start paying different subjects on different scales you immediately create a caste system within the school.

Teachers: Should high-demand positions like math, science, and special education receive higher pay because they’re harder to fill? Or should all teachers stay on the same pay scale regardless of subject?

@tome835 @BowTiedKong The salary is an exchange of money and health insurance for a teacher's time (7.5 hrs) and expertise.

@BowTiedKong As a bitter, middle aged, male teacher, I don't want any of the cutesy stuff, or more crap with the school logo on it. Also, we don't all drink coffee. If you want to give something a gift card to someplace like target or Amazon is the safest bet Or something practical. G2 pens

@adamboxer1 Our school tried to implement exit tickets for every class. Then the union had to explain to them that 30 kids x 3 periods a day (block schedule) x 5 days a week is 450 exit tickets per week for a teacher to look at. This idea didn't last long.

Two things are being conflated here- the rigor of education and the blending of special education and non special education students. 1. Quality education is unrelated to this blending. We have crap curriculum and lowered expectations.
The Principal’s Office@educator4ever36

This teacher says what schools won’t tell you. Unless your child is in advanced content or lucky enough not to be in an inclusion class, the rigor of general education has disappeared in favor of the special education students. I do not blame the teachers for this. I do not blame

DR Horton, Lennar, and the big home builders etc are a *necessary* part of any solution where the goal is to lower the cost of housing. They’re incomparably good at building that kind of product, inexpensive. And they build more than anyone else. By a LOT.

@TripperDay @JonahDispatch It’s not the “free market”. The employEES are the government. The employERS are the government. I don’t think any libertarian minded people have a problem with private workers banding together to push for better conditions.

@didier_paul @JonahDispatch Teachers Unions might be useful if their primary interest was students. We have given in to teachers unions for many decades, and student educational outcomes have not improved. It's time to eliminate teachers unions.

@dr_swa6 @didier_paul @JonahDispatch The money un a teacher's pay check is theirs to spend how they see fit. You can no more tell them not to pay you dues than you can tell them which grocery store to shop at.

@didier_paul @JonahDispatch All public sector unions have a built-in conflict of interest. Citizens forced to pay taxes; taxes pay teachers. Teachers forced to pay unions. Ergo, taxpayers pay unions who use the money to lobby legislators to benefit union members at the expense of taxpayers.
