At this the end of the artificial construct that is the Western calendar year I reflect on my childhood in #CapeTown #SouthAfrica and innocence lost. We are the last generation before the born-frees. Like the Port Jackson trees once ubiquitous we too will be lost to history.

Did you "kap tol" with a wooden spinning top, the point sharpened by rubbing it on tar and then honed on the smoother concrete blocks on the edge of the pavement? If so, did you kap overhand or pull pack the string at waist level kapping sturvey?

The enforced socio-economic divide in 70s and 80s South Africa made for interesting differences in accent and vocabulary even within the same city. On the Cape Flats we called it On-on but in Fish Hoek ( still quite colonial) it was Tig.

@joncowap @HopingYork @thisisyo1 Cheap meals are often unhealthy meals. There is increased evidence related to good health outcomes based on a platform of healthy nutrition in childhood. If children are provided healthy meals at school particularly in areas of deprivation, this can help.
