When he was 17, James received a life without parole sentence. After 30 years in prison he received his second chance.

Smiley spent 60 years at Angola before getting his freedom three years ago. He had no family left so @paroleproject brought him home and supported his reentry. Tragically, he was struck by a car while crossing a street in early January and passed away on January 31st. RIP friend.

God Behind Bars entered Angola, the largest maximum-security prison in the United States, to host a father-daughter dance for incarcerated fathers and their daughters. The success of the event has sparked plans for a similar experience for fathers and their sons.

We commend the Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections and @GodBehindBars for providing such an amazing day to these fathers and daughters. Moments like these allow families to strengthen bonds, create lasting memories, and remind children that they are loved. #lagov

Over the last five years @paroleproject has advocated for the release of dozens of 10/6 lifers who remained incarcerated after 50+ years in prison. At the age of 80, and after 56 years at Angola, John became the latest to come home.
