Speaking against the backdrop of the West Asia conflict and its impact on India's economy, PM #NarendraModi made a direct appeal to the public to curb gold purchases for a year to protect foreign exchange reserves. PM Modi urged citizens to not buy or gift #gold jewelry for one year, including for weddings and festivals. He noted, "Ek zamana tha jab sankat aata tha... toh log desh-hit mein sona daan kar dete the" (There was a time when a crisis occurred... people used to donate gold in the national interest) He stated that while donation is not needed today, patriotism requires citizens to temporarily stop buying gold, which is heavily imported. The goal was to reduce the country's import bill and manage the economic pressures from rising international fuel and gold prices.
