@robstaton If we are horrible, what's for the rest of the 46 teams that were below us. Maybe we are less horrible than the rest then.

Too many people treat Argentina as this romantic love letter to football because of one player, Messi. They are a horrible, horrible team. Call it out. Don’t glorify what they are. A disgrace.

@NewYorker The old Eurocentrism: Europe is civilization, Argentina and South America or the rest of the world, barbarism. Stinky old Eurocentrism painted with some new jargon

In the 2026 World Cup final, Spain stood for Europe, and Argentina represented the rest of the world. The Argentinean team, which won in Qatar, in 2022, is a great but flawed side, well into its autumn, inspired by providential causes. The Spanish team, by contrast, is obdurate and technical—a side without an obvious weakness, coached by the modest tactician Luis de la Fuente. As the final game settled into its decisive rhythm, a pattern emerged: persistent, angled attacks by Spain in their attempt to take the trophy from Argentina. They scrapped. They barged. Occasionally, they fought. But, in the end, Spain—a younger, better, more accomplished team—won the World Cup, for the second time.

Can someone please explain to me how Argentina ALWAYS get away with tackles like this? It's a stone-wall yellow card, but the referee gives nothing.

@KarlreMarks You are English, man. Do you watch the PL? Have you watched the last English champion? Did you also watch the England-Norway game? It can't get more controversial than that.

@GadSaad @elerianm We have this expression in Argentina: "don't spend gunpowder in chimangos." It's not worth it, it's impossible to reason with a conspiracy mind, like arguing with a flat earther.

Dear @elerianm, invoking Popper's Falsification Principle, what would the outcome that you'd need to see to falsify your position? If Argentina wins, you'll claim it was rigged. If Argentina loses, will it prove that it wasn't rigged or that it wasn't sufficiently rigged? In other words, there is no "fair" way by which Argentina might rightfully win. With all due respect, I've spent my entire career writing about people's lack of critical thinking. You might be a perfect exemplar of a highly educated person that is otherwise fully lobotomized. Why not simply enjoy the astounding players on both teams? Why not celebrate the artistry of Messi and his qualities as an individual?
Mohamed A. El-Erian@elerianm

A question on many minds for today's World Cup match is whether Argentina will have 11-players on the pitch against Spain … or if the officiating crew (both on the field and in the VAR room) will be playing for them once again!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 #worldcup #argentina #spain @FIFAWorldCup @fifacom_ar

@tpacker This was an exhibition game. When the final was at stake, Argentina beat England with total football. The English parked the bus for 40 minutes, defended with 10 men and didn't make 3 consecutive passes.

Argentina have repeatedly shown us everything football shouldn’t be. Today France and England showed us what it should be. No hate between players, no filthy fouls and trying to actually harm each other, no political statements, no favouritism, no disgusting behaviour from fans just the beautiful game.

The fundamental quality required when building a World Cup-winning side is a group of top-level footballers. No one has ever won this competition without several world-class players in their starting XI. Equally, there are numerous examples of teams who have failed despite all the talent they could hope for, and teams who punch above their weight through cohesion and mutual understanding. All this is fairly obvious, but never before in World Cup history has there been a final between two teams at obviously opposite ends of the spectrum. Other World Cup finals have been billed as Johan Cruyff vs Franz Beckenbauer (1974), Roberto Baggio vs Romario (1994) or Lionel Messi vs Kylian Mbappe (2022). But this is more of a hybrid: it’s Spain vs Messi. 📝 @Zonal_Marking 🔗 nyti.ms/459WKcl

@Alexarmstrong Nice exhibition game when nothing is at stake. When England played for a place in the final parked the bus for 40 minutes, defended with 10 men and didn't make 3 consecutive passes. And they still lost. Not to mention the French machine that created 1 chance in a semifinal

Beautiful game last night, the final we all deserved. No dirty tactics, nasty fouls or divisive political stunts, just two teams who love the game. As the saying goes, you can’t buy class.
