Stopped by the Duke tennis stadium this morning after helping my daughter pack up her dorm. Duke women’s tennis just had a huge NCAA tournament win yesterday over Tennessee to reach the sweet 16. Programs matter. The pathway matters. Exactly the point of my @WSJopinion piece.

NCAA men’s tennis Sweet 16 snapshot — by my count: 20 American starters in 96 singles spots. 12 from just two teams: Stanford and Ohio State. That leaves 8 American starters across the other 14 teams. The issue is the overall numbers — and what they mean for American players below the elite level.

College tennis is one of the best examples of what college sports can be: competition, education, development and opportunity. But the issue I raised in my @WSJopinion piece is bigger than tennis. As college sports become more professionalized, we have to ask: What is college supposed to be about? Appreciated chance to discuss my @WSJopinion piece on @NewsNation w/ @BlakeBurman The question is not whether international players have raised the level. They have. The question is whether American college sports are still preserving enough opportunity for American students — especially outside the elite tier.

The elite American players usually find their way. The bigger issue is the overall numbers — and the shrinking opportunities for non-elite American players who used to see college tennis as a real pathway. That pathway matters. It mattered to me. Thanks again to @WSJopinion for giving me the space to make the case.

College sports is the Wild West. College tennis helped shape my life. Now the sport is facing a serious question: Where are all the Americans in American college tennis? Thanks to @WSJopinion for giving me the space to make the case.

Just re checked the numbers—ACC + SEC men’s team finals: 24 singles players… 3 Americans…HELLO??!! That’s a system that’s lost its balance. College sports used to DEVELOP American athletes. Now it’s short-term wins, global recruiting, and no structure. If American players don’t have this pathway anymore, where do they go? I’ll be talking about it tonight on Newsmax with Greg Kelly (9:40pm ET).
