There were 18,560 applications for International Protection in 2024. In a country of 5.15 million people, that represents 0.36% of the population. To claim this represents a threat to social cohesion is in itself a bigger threat to social cohesion than any migrant or refugee.

In 2025, Ireland's International Protection system saw a significant drop in new applications (38% fewer by Q3 compared to 2024). There is no threat to social cohesion from refugees, the threat to social cohesion is an inability to respond and a desire to blame them for it.

The average employee in Dublin earns €49,500. A newly qualified teacher earns under €42,500. A nurse just over €37,000 and a garda less than €39,000, if not doing shift work. None of them meet the (€56,000) minimum salary requirement for a one-bedroom ‘affordable’ apartment.

Applications for 99 affordable purchase homes in Dublin will open later this month. One-bed apartments will cost between €248k and €332k; two-bed apartments will cost between €320k and €414k and three-bed houses will cost between €378k and €473k. jrnl.ie/6870044

How is the @EPPGroup-led EU Parliament selecting experts to its public hearings and seminars? @EPInstitutional first disinvited me from a public hearing on EU electoral law, and then created the conditions for Prof Pech to step back from Rule of Law seminar aimed at whitewashing illegally appointed judges. It got drowned out in all the good news from last night, but Boston Mayor Michelle Wu became the youngest person to be reelected in the city's history. She ran unopposed because her opponent--Patriots owner Bob Kraft's son--withdrew a few months ago after realizing he had no hope of winning.

Out of the €8m written off last year, €4.5m related to the State pension. While overpayments (money going to people not entitled to it) at any level are unacceptable, overpayments represent less than 0.5% of DSP’s annual budget, the vast bulk of which is recouped.

Our income tax code gives preferential treatment to married breadwinners over singles & two income couples. We only have 2 tax rates. Most countries have 4-5. In 70s and 80s we had 6 rates. Moved to 2 rates in 90s to simplify our tax code, but it’s why many pay highest tax rate.
