Ashington AFC Pays Tribute to Cecil Irwin Ashington AFC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Cecil Irwin at the age of 83. Born in Ellington, Cecil was a highly respected figure in North East football. He made 351 league appearances for Sunderland AFC as a dependable and skilled right-back, enjoying a long and distinguished career at Roker Park. After leaving Sunderland, Cecil became the player-manager of Yeovil Town before returning to the North East, where he played a significant role in the history of Ashington AFC. As both a player and manager, he took charge of the club on three separate occasions. One of his proudest achievements came in 2001, following a memorable season that ended with Ashington being crowned champions of Northern League Division Two after 17 years outside the top division. Under Cecil’s leadership, the team won 25 of their 36 league games and scored an impressive 100 goals. Away from football, Cecil was also a well-known face in the Ashington community through the newsagents he ran with his wife Margaret on Woodhorn Road. Cecil’s passion for football and commitment to the game at all levels made him a true legend. He will be missed by everyone at the club and in the broader community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
