New career highlight: railing against the EU’s learned helplessness on a podcast. In this case about the annoying whining from a collection of the richest countries on earth who won’t allow themselves to provide financial support to Ukraine without Viktor Orbán’s approval.

🔊Podcast: Tim G. Jones, @pbergsen, Bill Farren-Price and Simon Taylor discuss 🇺🇦🇷🇴 energy dispute, Péter Magyar’s increasing poll advantage, fears of election delay, Viktor Orbán’s miscalculations around “Peak Trump”, and the EU’s wilful inertia: bit.ly/46ywz0f

Really fascinating that both Magyar and Orbán campaign so much in English on X. Hungarian voters are on Facebook, not here, and I don’t really know what it means beyond maybe highlighting how much of a liberalism versus illiberalism proxy battle the election there has become.

The National Investigation Bureau is now questioning the witness featured in yesterday’s fact-finding video concerning activities at the Göd battery factory.

@tothcsabatibor Handing out tax rises to Americans to presumably pay for Hungarian public services looks like Magyar’s best idea so far

Incredible things are happening in Fidesz's campaign HQ: AI in political ads should be banned before it's too late.

🔊New Podcast out! "A kind of false flag operation may be committed" Géza Jeszenszky, ex Hungary foreign minister, warns how Orbán's anti-Ukraine demonisation could turn more sinister on Twenty-Four Two with @pbergsen and Tim G. Jones. twentyfourtwo.substack.com/p/a-kind-of-fa…

@NewLeftEViews That was the real stuff. None of this weak “debt is bad” bollocks that the Europeans already believed anyway, just straight up promising “expansionary austerity”. You have to admire that level of academic legitimisation for a political idea.

@BurmanPhD Completely agree that it’s real, but I don’t think the EU plays a role through tax. That is a national competence, except for a minimum VAT set at the EU level that would be more likely to equalise prices between member states.

@pbergsen This is well studied. For example: groceries are cheaper in Belgium and Germany than in the NL. And in France, they're cheaper still. I'm not sure what the cause of the difference is, aside maybe from state tax policy. And that is indeed an EU rule.... consumentenbond.nl/nieuws/2025/bo…

A good new EU regulation would be to make it illegal to make claims like saying EU rules make a product more expensive in one member state than in another without backing it up with references to specific rules.

“It's important to deregulate and simplify, because there are too many obstacles in the internal market. A jar of Nutella or peanut butter costs more in the Netherlands than in Germany, partly due to regulations from Europe.“ 🎙️@MinPres Schoof at the informal #EUCO

Given Trump’s heavy handed attempts to control the Fed, we thought it would be a good time to do a podcast on how the Hungarian government went about taking control of its central bank a decade ago with a former deputy governor who was there at the time open.substack.com/pub/twentyfour…
