@evegoe @patmick2626 @TPS_Guy The issue with this POV is that players are going to sign contracts. I think this is probably an ideal situation, but a lot of guys aren’t going to be able to because they’ll have already signed

@pdashow @patmick2626 @TPS_Guy “It’s not saying that we are better or worse than the CHL. I think we’re just the next step in the development process, where we’re an in-between junior hockey and pro hockey. I just think that’s what it can look like,” said a B10 coach. nytimes.com/athletic/67978…

Gavin McKenna's season is over before April. Medicine Hat might still be playing for another 2-3 months. Weird.

@pdashow @TPS_Guy Teams work out in the weight room 2 x per week. The lighter schedule has benefits.

@mikemichiganfan @TPS_Guy Okay, you clearly aren’t understanding. At the time that McKenna chose the WHL, going from that league to the NCAA wasn’t an option. If he wanted to go to college he would have had to play in the AJHL (or maybe BCHL, but I think the north is AB territory).

@pdashow @TPS_Guy Thanks tips!. He chose the WHL then the NCAA. The WHL is a better league than the AJHL. You also haven’t answered any of my questions. So also who do you scout for? Are you a skills coach that knows what’s best for development of young players?

@mikemichiganfan @TPS_Guy In 2023, a player couldn’t go from the CHL to the NCAA. They had to pick one route or the other. When presented with that choice, McKenna chose the CHL. It just happened that later the ability to do what he did opened up for him.

@pdashow @TPS_Guy Are you sure about that? What evidence or proof do you have of that? Also how do you know what is best for McKenna himself?

@NickHertz3 @patmick2626 @TPS_Guy Again, no. Top prospects are going to sign NHL contracts and be ineligible to play in the NCAA. Some players will choose that route like Martone did. Others won’t and will sign early.

@pdashow @patmick2626 @TPS_Guy No duh most are going to sign NHL contracts if they can. My point is more top prospects are going to play in NCAA than CHL bc of the money and bc it is a harder league. If you don't correlate a harder league to better development than that is the main disagreement

@jbaraldi11 @a_torti91 @TPS_Guy Yep, and NCAA is going to get even older because certain CHL guys will go there after their OA seasons now. Age will start approaching USports.

@pdashow @a_torti91 @TPS_Guy Age gap is growing. CHL getting younger. NCAA getting even older B1G tried to introduce an age limit a few years ago, but it got shot down by the rest of the leagues. Not having a limit allows teams like Quinnipiac who doesn't get the high end 18/19 years olds to compete.

@pdashow @jbaraldi11 @TPS_Guy This comment has absolutely nothing to do with this argument. What does where you are located have anything to do with the fact UND, Penn State, MSU, Maine facilities absolutely dwarf any CHL facility.

@TPS_Guy question: if a player plays CHL at 16/17, gets drafted, goes NCAA for 18, then signs a contract, are they eligible to go to the AHL for their 19 year old season? Or would they have to go back to Jr?

@pdashow @patmick2626 @TPS_Guy It is and will become the preferred path for top-end prospects now that CHL players can move to college, because 1. It is a harder league and 2. Because of the $.

@jbaraldi11 @a_torti91 @TPS_Guy The average NCAA team of, sure, we’ll say 20 years ago, would have wiped the floor with a CHL team too. Because age makes a big difference. There are very few teams I can think of that would have been competitive. Maybe those Taylor Hall Windsor teams. They were loaded

@pdashow @a_torti91 @TPS_Guy The NCAA of today isn't the NCAA of 40 years ago. The CHL of today isn't the CHL of 40 years ago. The average NCAA team today would mop the floor of an average CHL team today, and yes that's because for the 4 year age difference.

@jbaraldi11 @TPS_Guy @a_torti91 And no, we aren’t talking about averages. Because the average NHL draftee isn’t going to college at 18. We’re talking about high-end, top of the line, specific players.

@NickHertz3 @patmick2626 @TPS_Guy I can guarantee you I don’t give two flying donkey farts where Gavin McKenna chooses to play hockey. No one is denying that the NCAA is a tougher league. Tougher doesn’t make it the “premier avenue” for players to go to the NHL, which is what I took issue with

@pdashow @patmick2626 @TPS_Guy Compare the points per game stats for players who have played both in CHL and NCAA and tell me which is the harder league. Its obvious man... you just wish McKenna stayed in the CHL, and for a Canadian I don't blame you

@pdashow @a_torti91 @TPS_Guy The CHL wasn't the best development league because they played more games. It's because they had the best players.

@pdashow @a_torti91 @TPS_Guy McKenna is going to be a multi-millionaire in a few months, and like most hockey players comes from a well off family. You're the one that think the only reason to choose the NCAA is NIL.

@jbaraldi11 @TPS_Guy @a_torti91 Absolutely. On average. But it’s very funny to me to dismissively go “whatever man, you don’t know what kind of facilities these guys play in down here” when the junior team that exists in my city plays in an (almost) brand new NHL rink

@pdashow @TPS_Guy @a_torti91 I don't care where you're based ... on average NCAA facilities are better than CHL facilities, especially the high-end schools, where most of these guys are going to wind up.

@a_torti91 @jbaraldi11 @TPS_Guy I’m putting way too much stock in the argument that has existed for 40 tears as to why top players choose to play in the CHL? You sure about that?

@pdashow @jbaraldi11 @TPS_Guy You’re putting way too much stock in this games played argument. Remember that they would play close to 80 games in minor hockey only a few years ago with tournaments, travel, etc… McKenna is a better player now by going to the NCAA then what another year in CHL would have done
