I certainly hope so." Ted Williams. Williams checks out with the guard at Marine Barracks in Washington D.C. after being released from active duty! On 1 January 1951 Ted Williams was promoted to captain in the Marine Corps Reserve. Recalled to active duty on 1 May 1952, he served in the Korean area with the 1st Marine Air Wing from February-July 1953. Following his return to the United States in August, Williams resigned his Reserve Commission to resume his career with the Boston Red Sox in Boston, Massachusetts. After returning from missing three seasons for military service, in which Ted Williams won three medals of valor, Ted Williams hit a home run on the day he returned. For the season he hit .342/.497/.667 with 38 home runs. Ted Williams led the league in runs, walks, total bases, OBP, SLG, and OPS and won the MVP. “I liked flying. It was the second-best thing that ever happened to me. If I hadn’t had baseball to come back to, I might have gone on as a Marine pilot.”
