All psychiatric literature is seeped in this misunderstanding - reifying troubling thoughts and feelings as if they are independent entities that are nothing to do with us

@m_scheeringa These are good points, although I do believe that excessive screens aren't good for kids. Fortunately, there are studies underway like the ABCD study that will be better equipped to answer this question more definitively.

3/3. Third, zero findings in one study were replicated in any of the other studies. It took me all of 5 minutes looking at Table 1 to see that. I know this won’t change anyone’s mind. The anti-phone movement seems like more of a culture war than a science war.

1/3. This review by Chang and Lee does NOT show that internet/phone use changes the way brains wire up. This type of causal conclusion is flawed for three main reasons: First, all 12 reviewed studies were cross-sectional...
Jonathan Haidt@JonHaidt

There are now multiple studies showing that a heavily phone-based childhood changes the way the adolescent brain wires up, in many ways including cognitive control and reward valuation. Here's a review of them:

I really don't need, or even want, every actor or athlete I watch tell me their political views. However, if you spew wild extreme stuff, it's going to affect my ability to support you. Here's to the Chiefs missing lots of field goals next year.

@sbaroncohen While I'm usually wary of any article that begins with "the truth...," there are good points here that follow the science with how dimensional mental health conditions actually are.

Pleased to see some of the more recent reviews on Amazon by readers of my parenting book. "A hidden gem!" "Mastered the art of explaining research in an engaging manner." "This is the one parenting book to have." "A breath of fresh air." Thanks for the kind words.

Some of the same folks flying the flag upside down were condemning athletes for taking a knee at the national anthem. Consistency has never been a strong suit when it comes to politics. From a brain science perspective, though, it's kinda fascinating.

Parental substance use leading to child abuse and neglect leading to child mental health problems leading to psychiatry appointment to "fix it." Hey @Mad_In_America, if you really want to reduce medication use, maybe devote a little bit of energy on stopping this cycle early?

@Mad_In_America A broken bone is normal response to being hit by a bus, but we still use a diagnosis and still try to help people's suffering. Can we elevate this discussion please?

Researchers: #Depression Is “A Normal Brain Responding to Stress or Adversity” “There is abundant evidence that it is the context of our lives and not the balance of our chemicals that offer the most insight into depression.” By Peter Simons madinamerica.com/2024/04/resear…

@justin_garson While I agree that we are using a lot more clinical language these days and it isn't always useful, remember that labelling is going to happen regardless. You many not like "ADHD," but I'm not sure "stupid and lazy" are any better.

A hallmark of a psychiatrized society is our tendency to shift from talk about thoughts and feelings, to talk about hypothetical inner causes of those thoughts and feelings: “I feel sad during winter” becomes “I have SAD”; “I hate chewing sounds” becomes “I have misophonia”…

@markhoro @joannamoncrieff Yes but that's a problem with interpretation not with the label itself. There is nothing preventing us from teaching folks that mental health conditions can be mild or serious, just like everything in health.

@pedipsych @joannamoncrieff If someone breaks a leg or gets the flu we don't jump to the conclusion that they have an underlying vulnerability/abnormality requiring long term treatment if there is an obvious precipitant. People generally make that jump for anxiety/depression
