Unbelievable experience on our flight back from LGW yesterday on @airtransat. As she was collecting trash from passengers, a flight attendant looked at the empty fruit cup that my hijab-wearing daughter handed to her and then said “what is this? Where did you get this?”. Confused, my daughter turned to me. I said, “it was fruit we brought with us on the plane”. She then said, you took this from the back didn’t you! This was mine. You got it from the back of the plane. You took this”. Shocked and speechless, I said, “are you seriously accusing us of stealing your fruit cup? Is this some sort of joke?”. She insisted her fruit cup was taken by a passenger and she was looking for the person who took it. This was all done very publicly and loudly. I immediately stood up and went to the front of the plane to speak with the crew director. As this incident was public and another flight attendant witnessed it, I was profusely apologised to by the other crew members and the director and encouraged to file an official complaint with Air Transat. They thanked me for my grace in not making a scene and addressing them privately. Shaken by it all but reassured by the crew’s response, I let the matter rest. A few hours later, as we landed and the seatbelt sign was turned off, I immediately got up to stand next to my young children in the aisle one row ahead, so they are not alone. A white man who was sitting with his two daughters in the row in front of us started to hurl abuse at me for “cutting the line”. One of the things he said, aside from the ongoing foul swearing – “why don’t you go steal some fruit?”. He then told us to “go back where you came from”. The reason why I am telling this story is to highlight the power and harmful impact of the actions of that flight attendant towards a Muslim woman. Even though she was wrong, and the entire crew apologized, 1. She demonised and criminalized a hijab-wearing young Muslim woman publicly and 2. This very public false accusation and disrespect emboldened the racist man sitting in front of us to insult and abuse us even further. False public allegations, even if they are taken back or apologised for cause irreparable damage to those being targeted. Especially those who are racialised and marginalized in society. Out of pure exhaustion from a very long and draining trip, I probably wouldn’t have filed a complaint with @airtransat. But the racist ripple effect of that awful interaction serves as a reminder of the far reaching impacts of public statements and interactions that demonize those from already stigmatized identities.

Our demands on the British government are quite simply this: Abide by international law and end arms to Israel now.

When there are no legal channels and a person wishes, as their international legal right to do so, claim asylum in the UK how then do they enter the UK to claim asylum? There are currently no legal methods to claim asylum for the UK. France offered to have a UK asylum processing centre on French soil. But the UK Government turned down the offer. The same UK Government that's then played up people coming by boat across the channel while ignoring the rest of the country as it turns to shit. Asylum seekers aren't illegal simply because the UK Government has decided to ignore its international legal obligations. It's not the fault of the asylum seekers that the UK Government, illegally in the eyes of international law to which the UK is signed up to uphold, ignores its international legal obligations but instead labels, illegally according to the UK courts, asylum seekers as being illegal immigrants. Saying something doesn't make it so even if the person saying it is an MP or the PM. When a person is seeking asylum, they are legal until duly processed by the country they're seeking asylum at. So it is only after legal due process can an asylum seekers turn from being legal to illegal. 25% of asylum seekers get their asylum claim refused as determined by the UK Government AND UK courts based on UK law AND international law. Most of these are deported back to their country of origin. Until their claim is refused, they're legal both in the eyes of UK law and international law. Check the law yourself. We all are supposed to live within the law. Do you? It has been the UK Government decision NOT to process asylum seeker claims. It has also been UK Government policy not to allow asylum seekers to work until their claim is adjudicated. Asylum seekers aren't getting benefits. But it is the obligation of the State to house them & ensure they're safe until their claim is adjudicated. Hence 100s of thousands being kept in hotels mainly in the poorest regions of the UK at the UK Government's expense, an expense far greater than the cost of processing an asylum seekers claim! It's not the fault of the asylum seeker that the UK Government doesn't process their claim. It's the UK Government's fault! If you've got a problem with so many asylum seekers housed across the UK then you need to take that up with the UK Government, for it is the UKG fault and has been for both Labour and Tory Governments. You should be demanding your MP to get the UK Government to process asylum seekers on French soil before they get to the UK or even in their country of origin AND to rapidly process anyone that's already arrived. You should also demand your MP to get asylum seekers housed everywhere in the country including in the more affluent South or just in the South where asylum seekers first arrive on the UK shores! Why is it there's only tiny protests in Kent about asylum seekers and no protests by locals across the South East of England? You should be asking your MP why it is that asylum seekers are put up in hotels and accommodation in the poorest regions of UK! The asylum seeker has no say on where they're put once they put their claim in.

When politicians demonise migrants, the far right listen. When they say refugees should be “sent back to where they came from”, the far right listen. When they complain about asylum seekers staying in hotels, the far right listen. Let’s promote a message of unity instead. One that tackles the issues facing us all: the housing crisis, the collapse of our NHS and the disaster of privatisation. One that gives hope to all communities that a fairer society is possible. Stand up to racism. Defend refugees. Inspire belief in a better world. That is how you defeat the far right once and for all.

Far-right violence hasn’t come out of nowhere. It is the result of anti-migrant rhetoric from mainstream politicians who scapegoat refugees. We are an anti-racist movement that believes in a more inclusive world. We defeated the far right before. We will defeat them again.

No one claimed Lucy Letby represented all white women when she murdered babies. But the merest rumour of a criminal being black, brown, Muslim, trans or an immigrant and suddenly they represent that entire group. Disgusting. #Southport
ً@strengthtodream

Funny how there was no demand for all white British men to be punished/considered criminals after one of them recently murdered 3 women with a crossbow, apparently one person only represents a whole group when they're brown, Muslim or an immigrant. 🙄 Fuck this country.

I’m told that an overwhelming number of Jews in this country are Zionist supporters of what Israel is doing in Gaza. According to the most recent survey around a third of British Jews now do not see themselves as Zionist - a significant minority - and the number is rising. But whatever the figure, it’s irrelevant. The majority of Afrikaners during apartheid, the majority of Germans in Nazi Germany, the majority of 19th century white Americans during slavery also insisted their racism was justified. It wasn’t. They were wrong. What they were doing were crimes against humanity. What Israel is doing now, with the support of the Chief Rabbi and the Jewish Establishment is no different.

This is also supported by the TUC, which represents 6 million workers.. As well as Keir Starmer himself for his 2020 leadership bid.. Also charities like Save the Children.. The Archbishop of Canterbury." "The cap is seen as a key driver of child poverty in this country.. If the Labour party have a moral mission it should be to eradicate child poverty" SN, "Do you feel you have achieved anything?" 🧵 I don’t think many of the media or people on platforms like this understand quite what @Keir_Starmer has done. Parliamentary democracy is designed to have a number of safeguards to stop party leaders behaving as despots: one of those is limits of the use of the whip. (1/9)
