Today is one of those long days. My wife is preparing to go into surgery. Back in the fall, we discovered she developed a staph infection caused by the prosthetic in her left leg. The only remaining option to try and resolve this is for the surgeons to remove the entire prosthesis and replace it with two fixed rods containing a powerful antibiotic. This is meant to heal the area over the next 3, 4, or 5 months. Only after that will she face another surgery to implant a permanent prosthesis—at least, that’s the theory, as this whole process is essentially a trial to see if it works. It is deeply frustrating to watch her go through this. Today, I will be like a robot, just waiting outside the hospital. The surgery is expected to last between 6 and 8 hours. I won’t even be able to see her until tomorrow because they won’t allow me into the intensive care unit today. I hate this. Her smile this morning...
