Paid for his ramen and left. Something about the way he asked made me follow him to the parking lot. “Hey, you looking for work?” He turned. Surprised. “Yeah. Got laid off two months ago. Applications everywhere. Nothing yet.” I could see his car. Backseat full of stuff. Blanket. Pillow. He was living in it... “What kind of work you do?” “Warehouse. Forklift certified. Anything really. I just need something.” Pulled out my phone. Called my buddy who manages a distribution center. “You still hiring?” Put the guy on the phone. They talked. My buddy said, “Come in tomorrow. Ten AM. Bring your forklift cert. We’ll try you out.” The guy hung up. Stared at me. “Did that just happen?” “Yeah. Show up on time. Work hard. It’s yours.” He grabbed my hand. Shook it hard. “I’ve applied to a hundred places... Nobody calls back. You just… made one call. Why?” “Because I’ve been unemployed. I know how it feels when nobody gives you a shot. Now you got one. Don’t waste it.” Got a text two weeks later. Unknown number. “It’s the grocery store guy. Still working. Got my first paycheck. Getting a place next week. Thank you for making that call. You changed everything.”

My mother and father. My mother died 10 years ago- she was abused mentally and physically by my father- a drug dealer that killed 2 people in a drug deal gone wrong. I’ve heard a lot of well-intended, but intellectually dishonest, motivated reasoning from academics and activists-about race, gun violence, and policing- they’ve dominated the conversations, narratives, and even policies related to these topics- I know that needs to change, mostly for the many victims and families affected. I’ve lived a life that’s given me perspective from the inside of those issues. The movie Superfly came out in 1972. Curtis Mayfield meant the songs to be a warning, but many men like my father chased the lifestyle as if Superfly was meant to be an anthem. I’m going to be doing a podcast discussing what got us to this type of violence and what can be done to address the factors. I hope to be joined by a man that fights the best fight- his group patrols violent streets looking to diffuse tensions before it escalates to deadly violence. I was born the same year Superfly came out. The title for the podcast is: “A Son of Superfly- an Uncomfortable Conversation for a Half Black Man.”
