@dhh Forced use of real-time comms and forced open-plan co-location is often motivated by managerial surveillance, i.e. “I want to be able to see your every action on company time”. Might as well go and work in a cotton mill.

Early on, many startups want to hire generalist that doesn't require much management. As companies scale more management is introduced, and they start hiring specialists. Is there a way to grow a company that doesn't leave early employees unhappy about the change?

My argument is that if your senior engineers aren't mentoring, they aren't actually doing the work of a senior engineer.

Don't "work harder." Instead: Cut away distractions. Stop doing fake work. Ask for help. Plan. Solicit criticism. Automate what can be automated. Engage your mentors. Exercise. Get more sleep. Whatever you do, don't "work harder." It's pretty much never the answer.

@kernkim 👋 — When I started @codefrosting I founded the company for a (now defunct) product I wanted to build. So limited liability was the reason. If I would start today I’d go freelance as in Freiberufler.

One thing I forgot to ask: @peritus, why did you register a business at the trade office (Gewerbeamt) instead of just being a freelancer (Freiberufler)? Is that something you would recommend to others?

Ah 2018. Scrum means "Waterfall but we don't have time for analysis". Kanban means "Scrum, but we don't have time for sprint planning". Agile means "We have no process, but we do use JIRA extensively"
