@StefanoZorzi @daveg And for "starting with small things", you're missing the competition part : you need some form of conflict / co-operation / collaboration (see @swardley or twitter.com/swardley/statu… for details) to drive up quality, quantity and other dimensions.
Simon Wardley@swardley

Me : ... then you can say "we conflict with other universities over purchasing" which at least might give you pause for thought and question why you don't collaborate or co-operate? Don't slip back into using "but we're in competition" and stick with "conflict" until ...

@StefanoZorzi @daveg I wouldn't be so sure about "cultural production" : we've done it for a long time and with great success without much economic specialization (think Aboriginal Art or Lascaux for example).

Hypothesis: Greece was one of the cradles of civilization because of the effects on islands on what could be described as economic entropy. Here’s why: Energy flows across a temperature gradient towards higher entropy. Money flows across a value perception gradient (I perceive enough value to pay so that you will sell so you perceive less value and the traded material changes hands) towards higher ‘economic entropy’. Islands (or lakes for fish) create species diversity through isolation and genetic drift. But they also do the same for economic specialization and I believe this may be what happened in the Greek islands and later in the wider Mediterranean. The islands create isolated, specialist production of tradable goods.

@daveg I would bet it’s more of a « city » effect compared to an « island » effect for Greece early surge…

@daveg I remember reading (but where) you need multiple cities to get growth : one in isolation will give you nothing. Hence Italian cities (Florence, Milan, Pisa, Sienna, Genova) in XII - XV; American cities (New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, Detroit) in XIX.

@dr_c0d3 @dianamontalion The books themselves are not dangerous off course… But there are lots and lots of them, covering a lot of concepts (andon, just-in-time, quality, jidoka, kaizen, to name just a few) : they could become a large part of your reading time 😂

@perrick @dianamontalion Careful in what sense? Some books could be dangerous? In the particular case I learnt something useful and found the book very practical and full of examples

@LauPaSat_pl It took a bit more time than anticipated since youtube-dl (the tool I was relying on) seems to be on the way out. We did a "hot swap" to yt-dlp and now everything should be back to normal.
