According to analyses drawing from Bureau of Labor Statistics data, Massachusetts experienced a contraction of about 0.74% in private-sector employment as of March 2025—equating to roughly 24,000 lost jobs—worsening to nearly 37,000 net losses by early-to-mid 2025 in some updates. States like Florida, Texas, and North Carolina have far outpaced this performance, each exceeding 10% growth and generating massive absolute job creation: Florida with over 900,000 private-sector additions (bolstered by strong ongoing gains), Texas leading nationally with around 1.3 million net additions, and North Carolina adding roughly 410,000 nonfarm jobs (predominantly private). Several factors contribute to Massachusetts' lagging private-sector performance. High costs of living, energy prices, employer health care premiums, and regulatory burdens have been cited in reports as deterring business expansion and driving out-migration.
