“没有一刻后悔,因为我觉得这是争取民主必须的代价”,香港占中运动发起人陈健民14日出狱对欢迎他的民众说。陈健民与戴耀廷和朱耀明同为2014年和平占中运动发起人,去年被判刑入狱。他说出狱后要做的事包括看望反送中运动被捕的年轻人。 bit.ly/2U9pWLT

"In order for CCP to have responded to #COVID-19 this drastically, the death toll would first have had to exceed local officials’ capacity to cover it up, and then also convinced the nation’s top officials that it represents an existential threat. " fxn.ws/2UUrR8P

#Coronaviruschina hopeless choice: does the patient go to hospital for IV each day, run to diff. hosp. looking for bed, or go home to infect the entire family? Public transport is shut down and medicine in short supply! Is this the Chinese efficiency so many Westerners extol?

#WuhanCoronavirus An email from a nurse in Wuhan on Jan. 22: hospital would not give definite diagnoses to many infected medical personnel. Another Wuhan resident called for aid; hospitals have run out of protection suits and other supplies. Local markets are out of provisions.

Hospital staff made up names for patients wounded by the army after the Tiananmen massacre, to protect them from being traced and persecuted.
Ian Johnson@iandenisjohnson

Just in time for the 30th anniversary of the June 4, 1989, Tiananmen Massacre, this new book by @liaoyiwu1 tells the stories of the ordinary Beijingers who took the brunt of the army's assault. The June Fourth saw the bravest and the best in Beijing rise to defend their brethren. Many of those who survived endured decade-long prison sentences. Miao Deshun lost his mind while fighting his suspended death sentence tinyurl.com/y26n2lf4

I've been reading @liaoyiwu1's Bullets and Opium, and can't recommend it enough. Noone has told the stories of the "Tiananmen thugs" sentenced to jail terms for rioting. Liao served 4 years for his Massacre poem, and with his mordant, dark voice, he's the perfect narrator. 1/
