Pro-democracy where feasible. Modern secular values. Might support negotiated blue state secession bc US is broken in ways Canada is not. Vs relig. extremism.

@Michael7ucci @Keir_Starmer @MarkJCarney You can be quite certain the United States is also "importing antisemites" from various parts of the world. And Trump pardoned violent J6 antisemites. Also, the Government of Canada and its justice system do offer some protection to Jewish Canadians, but it is not sufficient.

@ChrisVanHollen So long as Hamas is around, there is no possibility of a two-state solution. Hamas is utterly opposed and wants to destroy Israel violently. It might still make sense to impose sanctions on the Israeli government and various Palestinian groups though.

Democrats have provided reflexive & unconditional support to Netanyahu & Israeli governments, even as they undermined the values we claimed to stand for.   It's time to end taxpayer-funded support & condition arms sales to end the occupation & salvage a 2-state solution. nytimes.com/2026/05/26/opi…

@realFugpa @ggreenwald Dishonest and silly in the extreme for many reasons. One thing for people to consider is that the scale of Trump moneymaking and market manipulation off his office means his political decisions are affected by personal and family wealth.

There are many problems with Glenn's take on the extent of corruption in the Biden and Trump families. One of them is that the larger the financial deal, the greater the corruption. Joe Biden and members of his family were barely qualified to work the night shift at Circle-K, but by being elected to political office, were able to parley daddy's power positions into a net worth of eight figures or more, while engaging in drug and prostitution parties. Trump was a billionaire before he started, doesn't even drink, and was making deals all around the world long before he ran for political office. A strong case can be made that the Trump family wealth would have been greater had he stayed out of politics. The same can not be said for the Biden family.

There was only one thing that surprised me about the Jubilee with MAGA die-hards. It wasn't that some people scream and refuse to stop talking. It wasn't that these were mostly young people cheering and finding purpose in wars but never fighting in them. It wasn't that their politics is more of a cult of personality. All expected and found in all factions. It was that, despite being political junkies, they had no idea about Trump's enormous corruption scandals because the corporate and independent media they consume doesn't mention it. They had no idea it existed:

@WakoclipsR @RadioGenoa What happens when a gay person, a Jew or a victim of family violence/gender apartheid comes across one of those "ordinary lives?" When a girl wants to inherit equally/have her testimony given proper weight?

Calling Islam a religion of peace isn’t controversial when over a billion Muslims live ordinary lives focused on family faith and community. You can criticise extremism without pretending an entire religion has nothing positive to offer. The same standard should apply to every faith.

I would love to post in my own name and maybe some day I will. I'm an ethnically (not religiously) Jewish academic at an Irish university. My name is so identifiably Jewish that, many moons ago, back when there were "phone books" I got a cold call from some American stranger who was very apologetic but who explained that he was looking for the synagogue (this was pre-iPhones) and he had already tried a "Shapiro" in the phone book but there was no answer so he thought he'd try a "[my surname]." He was in luck, but not because I'd ever attended services there. I just happened to know where it was. Until recently, my university had an encampment in the front of it with signs saying it was a "Zionist free zone" as well as the usual "genocide," "apartheid," "coloniser" blood libels. That encampment sat there for months with no action on the part of my employer to close it down. For all its rhetoric of "diversity, equity, and inclusion," they have made it exceedingly obvious to me that none of that applies to Jews. And, given the kind of vehemence I've encountered online from those who are convinced--against all evidence--that Israel is committing a genocide (the subtext of which is that "Jews are demonic baby killers") and that therefore all the usual rules of decorum and civil behaviour go out the window, I can only imagine what kind of threats, whisper campaigns, and maybe even violence I might be subject to if I "came out." Even my colleagues who signed the disgraceful Letter condemning the "genocide" (barely a month after October 7) while dismissing October 7 itself as a mere "crime" don't know what I really think. And I'm glad to be under the radar. But next time someone rants on about "academic freedom" in Irish universities, as if the fact of being a tenured academic means being free to say whatever one wants, tell them about me. There's great freedom for the mob. Less so for those who disagree with it. I feel less free to speak my mind on this campus than I ever have anywhere else. It's absolutely stifling. So that's why I'm anonymous.
Mitch@mitch10084

@bing_bong_banjo TBF, and as someone who agrees with the substance of everything you write- it's far harder to be taken seriously when you write anonymously. It also doesn't help when your pen name sounds like a joke. And yes, I know I'm being a bit of a hypocrite here given my own anonymity.

@JohnCleese Islamic justice is in several respects fundamentally unjust by the standards of Western societies, which are often centuries more advanced. If we wanted medieval justice, we'd ask. We struggled through religious wars and many other hard battles to earn the justice we now have.

In Canada — they’re now pretending to lynch Jews out in the open. No fear of the law. No fear of reprisals or shame. Just bloodlust on full display. I keep telling myself not to give up, but scenes like this really test any sense of hope or optimism I have left.

@CedarAndHoney The most basic foundation of a criminal justice system in a free society is that there can be no criminal penalty unless the action complained of was a crime under the law when it was committed. (Nulla poena sine lege).

@canajuneh @hwinkler4real @donwinslow It's very important we combat civic illiteracy in Canada. Information warfare thrives on it and that is not how we want our policy disputes, foreign affairs, secession referenda or anything else decided here. Unless of course we're a demagogue.

@hwinkler4real Canada supplies softwood lumber of higher quality than is typically available in the US. Economists determined that the price of US homes does indeed increase because Canadian lumber is tariffed. Was that somehow disproven?

@sarobertson_ Warped thinking. Punitive US tariffs induced the alcohol ban. Hoekstra is arrogant enough to think that Canadians will accept his hogwash.

Pete Hoekstra on the alcohol ban: "It's a clear indicator of how 11 provinces feel about trade with the US. They're sending a very, very clear message about how doing business with the US doesn't appeal to them. The PM has reinforced that message and so it creates some questions about does Canada really want to do business with the US?"

@sarobertson_ So dishonest. It only happened in reaction to illegal tariffs from the US. There was a free trade agreement in place and the US violated it even though Trump himself had it negotiated. Canada wants free trade but will not do that unilaterally while the US slaps on tariffs.

Today, I spoke with the President Herzog of Israel. I reiterated that the appalling treatment of civilians aboard the Gaza-bound flotilla was unacceptable, and that respect for human dignity must be upheld everywhere, at all times. I underlined the imperative of de-escalation in the Middle East, and the importance of a genuine resumption of dialogue among all parties. Progress toward peace and stability in the region must remain the clear, shared objective.

@gaghyogi49 I noticed (with a lower level of detail than you) differences like these, so I always assumed Klingons had considerable discretion in matters of dress. I assumed the main idea was to have a "battle outfit" one liked, with certain basic signifiers.

The crux of the problem. A "petition" after the election... And the 700 000 signatures Smith uses as a "reason" to hold a referendum is profoundly dishonest. 400 000 of them were to STAY in Canada. Not holding a referendum. The" question about the question" is a way to confuse voters, increase the likelihood that they think they are voting to get more powers from Ottawa, not secession. Québec has been through all this. Our question in 1995 was redacted with the same aim: confusion. Afterwards, many Quebeckers were surprised to realize what they had voted for. We almost broke Canada because of that. And, to Danielle Smith, deeds, and not words, are what matter. Your deeds show us that YOU want to referendum. At any price, any cost. At least, Jacques Parizeau was honest about he wanted. You are not. #cdnpoli #abpoli #polqc

PM Carney: "Is it helpful to ask these fundamental questions? No, it's not helpful. Of course it's not. Is it the democratic will of Albertans? Did they vote for this in the last provincial election? No, they didn't. It wasn't on the ballot paper, it wasn't in the mandates or platforms of the governing party and the official opposition."
