@mystsl honestly my only complaint about dt (besides some very cheesy song names and lyrics) is rudess's playing, it just lacks any soul sometimes and is complex for the sake of being complex but i could be biased cuz i love kevin moore on the early records

After Jordan Rudess joined, the band really leaned into that complexity/technical wankery that objectively impacted the songwriting in a significant way. We haven't seen songwriting on the level of I&W or Awake ever since, as it feels like Jordan isn't interested in that style

Dream Theater... They have some high highs but some almost inexcusable lows. No matter whether you think Mangini/Portnoy's absence was responsible, it's sorta indefensible that their self-titled and The Astonishing were as dull and lifeless as they were, even for DT. 🧵
