We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our colleague, Pebbles Bird. Pebbles brought great energy, heart and determination to her work. She reminded us that lived and living experience is a powerful teacher. By sharing her own story she hoped to inspire and support others.

She looked at how factors like cultural connectedness, Métis identity and trauma exposure relate to cardiovascular health, such as physical fitness. She completed her PhD under the supervision of Dr. Heather Foulds. Pewaseskwan’s Alexandra King was her co-supervisor.

Today (and every day) we celebrate and honour Mother Earth! #EarthDay is a reminder to move more slowly. Don’t let convenience rob you of the simplest joys: savouring the taste of a good meal, watching a beautiful sunset or listening to early morning bird song.

We’re excited to share that Waniska’s research grant funding from @CIHR_IRSC has been renewed! Moving forward, we will be using implementation science, which provides ways to help move knowledge into action. We’ll also be expanding our work to #Alberta & #BritishColumbia!

This weekend (and always), we’re honouring and celebrating women! Pictured here is our friend and colleague Pebbles Bird who passed in 2025. She was a model of strength, resilience, good humour and grace. She is missed dearly by everyone who knew and loved her. #IWD2026 #March8
