Some folks have asked me if it was smart for Morgan State University to cancel homecoming. Unequivocally, the answer is yes.
Anyone who has ever overseen operations for a university knows how even the most detailed planning, well-functioning systems and caring, competent personnel can all be subdued by human behavior. Fair Morgan, like all of our beloved HBCUs criminally underfunded over generations, lacks the infrastructure and personnel to provide consistently exceptional service to a campus community bringing more than 12,000 students and employees to campus on a regular day. The love that those students and personnel have for the institution masks well the issues caused by aging, generations of use, and a lack of resources to buy equipment or to hire third-party contractors who can provide more than short-term solutions to breakdowns.
We love the schools, their missions, and each other. We put our heads down and get back to the industry of Black excellence every single day in spite of the challenges.
That’s just a regular day. Imagine those same challenges with 36-50,000 people on and around the campus, many of whom do not have the same commitment of preserving resources as the campus family members do, and with a small percentage of them who aren’t impacted by incidents involving drugs, alcohol or violence. For those of us who have done the work, we know and cringe at the potential of chaos.
We are afraid of a student passing out drunk and traffic being jammed by a passing ambulance. We cringe at the risks of a lit cigar being thrown in a full dumpster full of flammable material, a car breaking down in a high-traffic roadway, people sneaking into residence halls, drugs and drinks being laced with potentially deadly substances, crowds stampeding from shots being fired, destroyed property, students who are contemplating self-harm or taking their own lives because the energy of homecoming has made them feel pushed to the edge, sexual assault, illegal or harmful acts being broadcast live to social media, and older donors, trustees, elected officials and VIPs being offended by all of the above.
That’s homecoming to a lot of us. Not enough problem solvers, not enough guests who care about their environmental impact, not enough cameras or detectors, not enough trash cans, not enough portable toilets, not enough traffic cones, not enough golf carts or bottled waters, not enough common sense and not enough time.
That cant be your Friday and Saturday night when your Tuesday night now lives in infamy by way of gunfire, injuries, panicked parents and national media coverage, and shooters still at large.
Should we have canceled homecoming? When you do the work and understand, truly understand that every homecoming without an incident is a miracle, the answer is unequivocally yes. #fairmorgan #hbcu #highereducation
