On our bike ride today, my son and I came across Rostislav and his family who recently escaped the war in #Ukraine and are now refugees in LA. Rostislav started teaching my son chess in Russian. This encounter is another proof that the #Ukrainewar has global impact. #SantaMonica

The Nikolaev chess club enjoys pride of place on the waterfront a plaza now fortified. I great to know the chess community is helping people here in various ways.

Chess continues in Nikolaev, despite intensified Russian attacks. Teenagers and adults played in good spirits, while parents and I admired the games. This narrowly peaceful scene could have been anywhere.
