@Martin_Abrams For any bus enthusiasts now is good time to see Streatham High Street. They were as far as you could see left and right of Becmead Ave. That’s 23 buses. And, we used to joke it’s like London buses. Some 30 minutes later I reached Sunnyhill Avenue where I started from.

I am deeply concerned by the traffic, congestion & delays to buses along #Streatham High Road and surrounding roads today and this evening.

Incidious Tories. So civil servants have to break the law and disregard ECHR 39 notifications if a Minister says so on removals to #Rawanda This is a new low in UK policy making. theguardian.com/politics/2024/…

An interesting article on sub-contracted social media moderators in Nairobi. Don’t be fooled by thinking this is simply a job done by AI.

With policies like these you really would think that we don’t have a housing crisis in the UK. #affordablehousing theguardian.com/politics/2023/…

I've just signed @RefugeeAction's petition calling for a not-for-profit asylum system. Add your name to tell the Home Secretary to end the cruelty and put people before profit. act.refugee-action.org.uk/page/135206/pe…

@cathynewman A prison building programme which is woefully behind schedule due to planning issues + Increased sentences + higher numbers on remand = visits to Estonia to see if they will take our incarcerated. Incompetent Tories.

This is an outrage. How have we come to this?

Blow to Rishi Sunak as offshore wind auction attracts zero bidders and inflationary pressures cause work to stop on the multibillion-pound Norfolk Boreas windfarm, designed to power 1.5m British homes, due to 40% cost increase. #windpower #zerocarbon theguardian.com/business/2023/…

@mrmarksteel We seem to live our lives an inside edge away from calamity. But we live another day revelling in the glory of a cover drive, not knowing what fresh hell tomorrow might bring.

@KimChaplain I fail to understand why given this was known about early on during the pandemic that no new Skills & Employment programmes were launched or existing flexed. Too much enphasis on older people and ill health. Longer Working Lives and EDI have failed.

Recession avoided but big picture is unheroic.
The UK economy did not grow at all in February and grew by only 0.1% between December and February.

@Emilyishness Totally agree. 2nd placed in 4/5 interviews trying to get back into chosen career - ironically employment policy. Until we address recruitment bias / discrimination no meaningful impact on 50+ inactivity. Also employment law is too loose e.g post pandemic 50+ redundancies
English

If these “Returnerships” really are the Gvt’s main offer on 50+ employment in this Budget, then I have some questions.
They boil down to:
🤷♀️Why would inactive 50+ do them?
🤷♀️Will they address any common 50+ barriers to work?
🤷♀️What…are they?
More specifically 🧵:
Simon Ashworth@SimonAshworth
So Chancellor @Jeremy_Hunt is expected to now announce “Returnerships” for over 50s at Wednesday’s all important #SpringBudget - training that focuses on flexibility and takes previous experience into account, shortening the length of time over 50s have to be in training.
