I've been getting a lot of requests for comments on the DOE report "A critical review of the impact of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions on the U.S. climate". Here are some initial thoughts. More will come later.

@RARohde Right! But what bothers me even more is that they create mostly “safe” districts where House members can become career politicians, becoming specialists at raking in cash and remaining in power. We need to eliminate gerrymandering and return it to The People’s House.

I don't know how you'd ever fix this given the current state of the US, but it's incredibly ugly and undemocratic that we allow politicians (of either party) to redraw voting maps for the purposes of increasing their own partisan advantage.
Dave Wasserman@Redistrict

NEW: as expected, TX Republicans unveil a 30R-8D gerrymander (up from 25R-13D today) that puts Reps. Henry Cuellar (D) and Vicente Gonzalez (D) in double-digit Trump districts and axes one Dem seat each in DFW, Houston & Austin/San Antonio.

@antikommunistic @CColose Now get your head out of your ass with these silly “big lie” pronouncements and debate what to do about climate change. Conservatives can solve problems too, and do it in smarter ways sometimes than liberals. But on this problem … only lies and distractions.

@antikommunistic @CColose It’s not that complicated. While it is true that water vapor is a stronger greenhouse gas, humans are not emitting water vapor and creating a water vapor imbalance. Water vapor is rising due to the rising CO2 and temperatures. It is a reinforcing feedback.

I never cared much about terms like “pollution” or “crisis” (for the most part criticizing these things is merely a distraction from substantive issues), but CO2 is the most important driver of climate change across geologic (and to a large extent, orbital) timescales and humans are flooding the atmosphere with it at a rate of 60x what geology inputs. The frauds in this discussion are emphatically not the ones concerned about that.
Chris Martz@ChrisMartzWX

There is no “climate crisis.” And CO₂ is not pollution. It has only been classified as such since it is a “greenhouse gas.” But, so is water vapor. Should water be regulated too? Oh wait, we don’t because it’s necessary for life. But, so is CO₂. You are a grifter and you are a fraud. You have been regurgitating the same BS for nearly 40 years. Retire already, grandpa.

@Jacob_Feuer Great point- I study rain and storm surge flooding and was wondering about this. What someone needs to donis seek to create uniform datasets, eg only clock-hour totals in recent decades to fairly compare to earlier decades. But technology changes are another possible challenge

I have seen many people declare that "the 2nd wettest hour on record" for KNYC happened yesterday. Technically true, but the data via IEM is pretty poor before 2000- it doesn't exist at all for many years (incl all pre 1965) and years with data are missing ~half of annual rain.

@zvi I am a flood forecaster/modeler and also seeking street/intersection information to help improve forecasts -- what was the time and location? (not 8:25am as it was nighttime)

@NJTRANSIT_NJCL So, is it a signal issue near Hazlet or mechanical issues? Well, I don’t know either because the train conductor has never said a word (nor apology)about the frequent stops and starts that have made us an hour late. I sometimes feel like I am on a train from the 19th century.

@NJTRANSIT_NJCL Terrible experience on the train today…. now about an hour behind schedule. Delay after delay, and never any explanations via the train’s PA system. The app has messages explaining things maybe half an hour later.

@Briancardie @Sportsnet exactly my thinking; must be Washington announcers. He didn’t feel bad, he saw the ref right in front of him and acted like the golf club swing to the face was a mistake

@_david_ho_ I can answer your questions! MethaneSAT is a nonprofit LLC started by EDF. It has been funded by grants and donations. The goal is to produce actionable data to reduce methane emissions. A cross-institutional team designed it. For more see methanesat.org

It’s data like this that make scientists pause to wonder if a runaway climate catastrophe is around the corner … agriculture failures on a massive scale and global societal collapse

Breaking News! Breaking News! Breaking News! Yesterday the global sea surface temperature anomaly hit a new record high of 0.702°C above the 1991-2020 mean, beating the previous record anomaly of 0.700°C set on September 9th. This is a 'Code UFB' event.

@JRVisscher @LeonSimons8 Yes it’s called the Holocene— the period just replaced by the anthropocene. Its last 6000 years have had a very stable climate compared with the current changes. Read about it- it’s not coincidental that it is when human population bloomed from a few million to to 8B.

@LeonSimons8 Was there ever a time of stasis since the ice age? It seems as if we expect it now, or get nervous if things are changing. But is it natural?

For decades this area has been kept relatively cool by sulfur emissions from ships. But this changed in 2020.
