Today is Palm Sunday, when we recall Jesus’ entry in Jerusalem and begin Holy Week, commemorating the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ

Today is the feast day of our Patron Saint, St Cuthbert. Durham Cathedral exists as the final resting place of one of the North’s greatest saints: the man who lived a humble and prayerful life and who inspired many to follow in the footsteps of Christ.

Yesterday afternoon the College of Canons of Durham Cathedral met to elect the Venerable Rick Simpson as the next Bishop of Durham. This ancient ceremony expresses the consent of the Diocese to Rick’s appointment, which the College did with great joy.

Interviews for the next Bishop of Durham will take place on 9 and 10 December with @durhamcathedral hosting a special time of 24/7 prayer to coincide with these, from Morning Prayer (8.30am) on 9th December to Morning Prayer (8.30am) on 10th December. Please do join us in prayer during these days, whether in person at the Cathedral, at your own church or from home. The Acting Bishop of Durham and @Bishopofjarrow, Sarah Clark said: “Please come and join us in prayer at whatever time of day or night you can. We invite you to come to Durham Cathedral to join us in prayer for the next Bishop as we enter the final stage of this discernment process. I appreciate that for some people, coming to the Cathedral might not be possible, so I invite you to join us in prayer at home or in church at a time that suits you. It is such a gift to be able to tell our hearts to God in prayer at what is a special time.”
