@neovaldis @helium The original hotspots don’t even work anymore, they aren’t any good for anything at all. They won’t even sync to the network and can’t get them serviced and fixed to do so.

We have now mapped 35% of the global road network. Here are our 6 principles for mapping we live by internally when building @Hivemapper . 1.   Radical attention to detail 2.   Data accuracy…at scale 3.   Push intelligence to the edge 4.   Machines > Humans 5.   Probabilistic consensus always beats rules-based 6.   Start with scalable foundation and narrow focus (and of course passive mapping is the only way) Some additional notes some of these. Data at scale is unforgiving 92% accuracy sounds good—until you’re mapping 10M unique objects. That’s 800K wrong features. At 95%, it’s still 500K errors. You need >98% accuracy to build a great map. Push intelligence to the edge If you don’t you’ll go broke. It's that simple. There are other good reasons for this but that is the primary reason. Probabilistic consensus always beats rules-based “If X then Y” fails in the real world. Every rule has a thousand exceptions. The world is too chaotic for manual logic trees. AI > humans for QA Humans get bored. They miss stuff. Managing them adds cost. AI is faster, more consistent, and getting better daily. Scalable foundation > flashy Start with a narrow, boring-looking product—if the foundation scales, you’ll win. Real leverage comes from systems that learn and improve with use. A huge thank to the entire Hivemapper community. Still much work to do, but the core is working.
