Scores of Indonesians have been criminally prosecuted for slash-and-burn farming in the past few years, according to this new article I worked on based on a review of online court records and interviews across the island of Borneo. Check it out here: news.mongabay.com/2023/12/tradit…

25 years of Mongabay - we've grown from around 10 staff members when I joined in 2015 to more than 100 today. Not something a lot of news outlets these days can say news.mongabay.com/2024/06/mongab…

The reality is, neither Shams or Woj's stories really make sense. Woj saying it was always Hurley didn't track because the Lakers wouldn't have waited a month to finally interview a candidate of that importance. Shams now saying it's always only been between JJ and Borrego doesn't make sense because the Lakers literally flew Hurley out and made him an offer. The reality is, JJ was seen as the favorite initially but had to wait until after the Finals. In the time that they had to wait, the Lakers made a run at Hurley. It didn't work out and now they're picking the conversation back up with Redick.

@jokowi @MongabayID The fires are genuinely terrible and Indonesia is right to try to suppress them. But experts we interviewed called for a more targeted fire policy that differentiates between kinds of actors and helps traditional farmers find alternatives to burning rather than locking them up.
