@stephencanning Unpopular opinion: a system where the only people able to serve are those who already have money (and thus have proved a level of competence in at least some area of life) is preferable to making ‘politician’ a career option.

MPs' basic salary just went up to £98,599. The headlines are predictable. Outrage, "out of touch", the usual cycle. But the thing that actually matters about MP pay isn't the number. It's the structural problem underneath it. When you don't pay elected officials properly, you

@opinion_black Was with you until the social media point. If the organisation was done via text would you hold O2 or Vodafone responsible? If a terrorist cell communicates via snail mail would you leverage fines against the post office? Sort points 1-4 and point 5 is redundant anyway.

Call this out for what it is: We have all witnessed the quite disturbing scenes of predominantly black school aged children behaving appallingly in Clapham yesterday. There is a combination of factors as to why this took place and I am going to point them out without fear or favour. 1. Parents. This is your failure. The children are an extension of you. You have abdicated responsibility & chose to be ‘friends’ with your children instead of being the architects of authority, discipline & boundary setting. Instead you are weak and your children know you are, thus diluting any respect that they would naturally have for you. 2. Schools. When people like Katharine Birbalsingh & her elite teachers speak about standards, discipline and teaching children in a ‘no excuses environment’ many of you turn your noses up. However, do you really believe that children who attend her school ‘Michaela’ would behave this way in public? Neither do I. Schools and how they operate are a barometer of where this country will be in the near future. This alone should be ringing alarm bells but unfortunately it is not. 3. Parliament. Those that are legislators in this country are way out of sync with what is required to churn out functioning useful youngsters in this society. With Labour MPs seeking to legalise voting for those aged 16+ I am only surprised that they were not in Clapham giving out flyers telling these youngsters that they are only robbing shops because of ‘white people and slavery’. Vote Labour! 4. Police The police were totally useless yesterday. The police on the ground? No. Their bosses? Yes. Scotland Yard and Chief Superintendents are mostly now chosen for their senior roles based on politics, sexuality and wokeness. At least 100 youngsters should have been arrested, publicised widely, hurried through the system and severely punished. A clear message needed to be sent. It wasn’t. This is why it will now be a continual occurrence. 5. Social Media. 99% of these ‘link ups’ are organised via social media platforms. These companies must be subject to criminal injunctions when their platforms are used to promote chaos. Further, if found guilty then the penalties should include eye watering fines and three year imprisonment for their managing directors. Lastly, the age to use Social Media should rise to 18 years. Conclusion. Many of the youngsters will claim they were ‘just having a laugh’. That may well be true. Families who were locked in the stores or staff working in those stores would surely disagree. That behaviour was disgusting and you parents should point that out. There is a time coming where some of these parents should be criminally liable for their actions of their bloody children. We are blessed to be in a country like this despite its many faults. We also have many opportunities and are frittering them away. Do better and stop the damn excuses. Control your children.

@philmyth @FUDdaily What is unserious about them. Farage sometimes changing his mind on things. I agree, he needs to just be a figure head and they need to get a cabinet and decide policy and stick to it. Can't be hard, not like there is hundreds of them.

There is a marked decline in Reform's polling performance lately and I think it's going to get worse. They're adept at making noise but we're back to that old adage... the higher the monkey climbs, the more you see of its arse. They keep holding press conferences to announce defections of grifters, opportunists and deadbeats, in settings that more resemble American (commercial) evangelical churches, and people can see that, fundamentally, Reform is not a serious proposition for government. You can still have all that glitz and glam, but on some level you have to be able to reassure voters that you are capable of forming a government and that you have viable solutions. What we're learning about Reform is that they're just not serious, they don't have answers, and they are not a meaningful departure from the status quo. We'd just end up with another chaotic government that made big promises but doesn't know how to deliver. As it happens, I have long thought the polls were over-egging Reform, and as we get closer to the election we will see more of this gradual disintegration, especially as Reform activists become ever more disillusioned. It is highly likely that they will do well int he local elections, but will seriously underperform on the basis of their performance in local government where they've again made big promises on the basis of flawed assumptions. That in my view all stems from the same basic lack of an intellectual foundation and thinking details don't matter. Reform believes that so long as they're polling well then there's no problem, which has led to this complacency. As such, they could very well implode before 2029. There's a lesson here for Restore Britain too. You cannot coast as a slop party in this game. To be taken seriously, you have to be serious.
YouGov@YouGov

Our latest Westminster voting intention (29-30 March 2026) has the Lib Dems on their lowest figure recorded by YouGov this parliament Reform UK: 23% (no change from 22-23 Mar) Greens: 19% (+1) Conservatives: 19% (+2) Labour: 18% (-1) Lib Dems: 12% (-1)

@jcwf1 @FUDdaily I'm not saying I would either, but the point is that Reform's unseriousness is leaving the door open for them.

“Poverty” here is the meaningless ‘relative poverty’ of course. The darkly comical thing about that being that deporting them would mean they’d no longer be classed as being in poverty by that metric. Everyone wins! 🥳
Emily Thornberry@EmilyThornberry

Half of all migrant children currently live in poverty - an already shameful statistic. But the Earned Settlement model will see that poverty prolonged for 90,000 children in working migrant families. That's why my community says the Government must think again.

Too many are too polite to say this. But mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination. Perform these rituals in churches if you wish. But they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions. Trafalgar Square belongs to all of us. It is a national memorial to our independence and our salvation. Last night was not like a televised football match or a St Patrick’s Day celebration. It was an act of domination and therefore division. It shouldn’t happen again.

@nxd1979 Did a walking tour of Frankfurt where the guide showed us a photo of it during the war - basically the cathedral surrounded by rubble. As the lone Brit in the group I raised my hand and said “sorry about that”. German girl in the group responded “it’s ok, I think we started it”

Back in 2014 I was on a walking tour of Dresden and our guide kept referring to the firebombing destroying this or that building until an American girl in her 20s raised her hand to ask "sorry, who firebombed Dresden?" and the group fell so silent you could hear a pin drop

If you’re seeing a bunch of Japanese posts, here are some fun facts: Japan has more daily active users and more time spent on X than any other country in the world. Over two thirds of the country is monthly active on X. X in Japan has one of the highest penetration rates of any social network in history.

@technopopulist Sure, on its own it’s meh. But it needs to be one of a whole suite of ‘hostile environment’ measures. Ban the burqa and cousin marriage, prevent foreign nationals from standing/voting in elections, prevent them from receiving any benefits/social housing etc, tax remittances…

Banning the burka is such a pathetic policy. The vast majority of Muslims in the Yookay do not even support it and do not regard it as remotely Islamic. Because, frankly, it isn’t. The burka is a marginal issue and most Muslims see full covering as ridiculous. Ban it if you must.
