The forgotten Arab atrocities of the Roman conquest of Jerusalem: the history you never learned at school. Tonight, Jews around the world will commemorate Tisha B'Av, the anniversary of the destruction of the First and Second Jewish Temples in Jerusalem. For the Jews of antiquity, the conquests of Jerusalem were not only a political disaster, ending Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel. They were also humanitarian catastrophes on an apocalyptic scale. The Roman conquest of Jerusalem, for example, involved the sort of barbaric savagery that brings to mind the Shoah or the October 7 Massacre. Some of the Jews fleeing Jerusalem swallowed gold coins before escaping, because there was no food in the besieged city, but plenty of gold. They hoped that as they hobbled out looking like Buchenwald inmates or Eli Sharabi on his last day in Gaza, they would have something to keep them alive outside. And then the Romans' Arab mercenaries devised a diabolical plan. Josephus describes: "One deserter was caught picking gold coins out of his excreta... When the trick was discovered... the Arab unit and the Syrians cut open the refugees and ransacked their bellies... In a single night, nearly two thousand were ripped up." The Arab atrocities during the Roman conquest of Jerusalem were so barbaric that Titus "was on the point of surrounding the perpetrators with his cavalry and shooting them down." But there were just too many of them, more perpetrators than victims. The Arabs let the Romans take the fall for their barbaric atrocities. "The Arabs and Syrians... began by indulging their passions in an undisciplined fashion," Josephus recalls, "and ended by letting Romans take the blame for their bloodthirsty butchery and their hatred for the Jews." The Arabs continued to disembowel the Jewish refugees from Jerusalem. They "looked around in case any Roman saw them, then ripped them up and pulled the filthy money out of their bowels." Most of their victims did not even have gold coins in their bellies. And the fear of getting disemboweled by Arab soldiers looking for gold was so intense, that many Jews who fled Jerusalem actually returned to the encircled city. It's all in Josephus' Jewish War, Book V. But they didn't teach you this at school. The rest, however, is history.

The video shows how the massacre started in the village of Tal, near Nablus. Israeli settlers raided the village, and unarmed Palestinian residents tried to defend their homes. Israeli soldiers and armed settlers then opened fire on them. During the attack, one Palestinian took a settler’s gun to defend himself against the armed settlers. Five Palestinians were murdered in cold blood, while one Israeli settler was also killed.

An IDF officer was killed in this morning's clash in the West Bank village of Tell after a group of Israelis conducted an unauthorized hike in the area. The slain officer is named as Maj. Yuval Ezra, 27, a battery commander in the 282nd Artillery Regiment's 411th Battalion, from Herzliya. The officer was hit by gunfire after a Palestinian snatched an assault rifle from a civilian security officer amid the clash. In all, two Israelis and four Palestinians were killed in the incident. The IDF has also recognized the second Israeli, a civil defense squad member, as a fallen soldier. He was named as Master Sergeant (res.) Benayahu Mellet, 32, a commander in the Jerusalem Brigade's 8119th Battalion, from Yitzhar. At the time of his death he was serving in the reserves as a regional defense soldier.
