Couple of lazy Sunday thoughts on how the Nats seem to think they're going to waltz to re-election. The emerging strategy has three prongs. All are, ahem… bold. 🧵

There's counterintuitive, then there's counter-reality. The notion this could HELP the Govt defies decades of research showing voters punish govts for energy price shocks whatever the cause + give no credit for mitigation efforts (Heath 74 Ford 76 Trudeau, Callaghan 79 Carter 80)

Hard to overstate what a disaster this is for the Govt. A PM who’d taken a clear, principled position on the Iran war could rally the country behind the response to the ensuing crisis. But Luxon went for mealy-mouthed ambiguity, and now they own every red cent of it.

Your role is played out. Go where you belong from now on, into the dustbin of history! (Trotsky) Depart, I say; and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go! (Cromwell) I look forward to the day when I barely remember your name! (Quin)

Bishop won't try move again after one bad poll. Poll of polls has the coalition (just) ahead. The bad week Luxon is having wouldn't have been any easier for any other Nat - and Bishop's one of the most pro-Israel Nats so he's hardly the right guy for right now.

talk of Senior Nats who are list MPs being vulnerable to losing their seats Nah. Major parties gain/lose candidate votes proportionately with left/right swing On Curia numbers, National loses 13 seats but also ~13 electorates. So, ~6 list places. Willis, Bishop, Goldsmith safe
Clint Smith@ClintVSmith

This is the thing to watch. Labour+Greens is closing in on the Coalition's support in the polls. If Chippy can credibly say he can govern without TPM that neutralises 1 of National's 3 re-election planks. The others (pray for economic recovery, attack CGT) are already in trouble

Apparently this is being called "fake news" because Luxon worked the tables at the event. But I wouldn't dream of saying he didn't work the tables. The man loves a selfie. What I said was he DIDN'T TAKE QUESTIONS, a fact I've confirmed with multiple attendees.
Phil Quin@philquin

Luxon just finished a breakfast fundraiser for supporters in Masterton where he DIDN’T TAKE QUESTIONS -- something I’ve never seen or heard of over a lifetime in politics. If you’re wondering how it went down in the room, ask yourself why I, of all people, was told about it.

What's revealing is that they persisted with this obsequious compliance AFTER the Supreme Court striped away any leverage Trump had to inflict pain for doing otherwis. Now, they're just bowing to him by choice. Pathetic.
Helen Clark@HelenClarkNZ

“The #Iran crisis has stripped back the veneer of New Zealand’s independent foreign policy, revealing something far more compliant. The Government has, in effect, stopped speaking with an independent voice.” Got it in one @bryce_edwards #nzpol @TheElders

Iranian regime: not cool. Illegal wars of regime decapitation: also not cool. Seems straightforward enough but, for Luxon, who's a lot dumber than he's given credit for, it's at least one too many things to hold in his head at the same time.
Clint Smith@ClintVSmith

I feel like Luxon might genuinely not realise when he's not answering a question. 5 or 6 times on RNZ, he was asked whether NZ supports the attacks on Iran and kept saying how bad the Iranian regime is but not saying whether NZ supports the attacks.

What the hell was that Pyongyang style lead story on @1NewsNZ that had Luxon manically cheerleading the performance of a Kiwisaver scheme he has done nothing to support and would never have put in place? Come on, we need better than this.

The Napier Mayor is probably in the wrong but getting lawyers to mediate what’s essentially a political scrap between elected officials is a category error. These things need political remedies, not HR processes. stuff.co.nz/nz-news/360943…

Part of me wishes everyone would just stfu about the English language protection bill in case people overseas hear about it and think we're such a bunch of hick morons we think the ubiquitous global lingua franca is somehow under threat. It's embarrassing.

Thought Chippy’s fairly astute speech was getting a fair run on @1NewsNZ tonight until Nicola Willis unveiled the devastating “jelly without concrete” line. Suddenly it was as if Davids Lange & Lloyd George were back among us. 1news.co.nz/2026/02/23/hip…
