I woke up in a cold sweat, heart hammering against my ribcage, wondering — what would have been my response if it had really happened? Would I have thrown away my bindi and my beliefs to save my life? Mind you, I don’t blame anyone who did that. Civilians are not trained to face death and fear is a powerful emotion. But I can’t help wondering, Would I have behaved that way, or would I have tried to be stoic, knowing I was going to be dead anyway — because nothing I said or did would have mattered? Or worse — would I have simply frozen in terror, body and mind paralysed? Honestly, I don’t know. I would like to believe that I would have proved to be a worthy daughter to my freedom fighter father. But I don’t know. Belief is easy when you are lying safe in your warm bed, the night broken only by the hum of a ceiling fan, not by the crackle of automatic gunfire. The truth is, none of us knows. Courage is a muscle you never know you have until you are forced to use it. But one thing I do know. We, as a people, have spent too long pretending that this choice — between life and dignity, between survival and surrender — is a theoretical one. It is not. It is real. It was real for the 26 families torn apart in Pahalgam. It was real for the woman who watched her husband of five days fall lifeless on the grass. It was real for the little boy who saw his father lying in a pool of blood, pants pulled down by the Islamic terrorists to confirm whether he was circumcised or not. And it can be real for ANY OF US! ANYTIME. ANYWHERE! That is the terrible, shattering truth that no amount of hashtags, candle marches, peace conferences, or selective outrage can wish away. let us make no mistake — the enemy does not care for our secular sermons, our peace marches, our Aman Ka Tamashas, or our desperate pleas for “humanity.” To them, a kafir is a kafir. A target. A trophy. A body. And no amount of chanting borrowed slogans will change that. We have spent far too long celebrating cowardice — calling it ‘tolerance’. We have lulled ourselves into believing that we are safe behind the bulletproof glass of secular platitudes, that if we only sing the right songs, utter the right slogans, we will be spared. We won’t. What would I have done? I still do not have an answer, but I pray for the strength to have one. When — not if — the time comes, may we have the strength to lift our heads high, even if it is for the last time. May we be worthy of the blood of our brave ancestors that runs in our veins.
