@neovictorian23 @WhatHoARat I’m sure it’s super relevant. At least here in California.
English

@phoenixryder79 @WhatHoARat Still interesting and relevant.
English

@WhatHoARat Still haven’t seen the movie. Been meaning to watch it for 35 years, yet I relate to what I saw in the trailer. Should probably watch it in its entirety.
English

@phoenixryder79 As long as you're not the army surplus store guy or robert duvall's wife you're okay.
English

@WhatHoARat Did you pee in a bush in front of a house and then proceed to walk into said house right after? Makes perfect sense.
English

@phoenixryder79 i'm sorry, i really really had to pee and there were no public restrooms.

I think of writers as falling into two alignments - innies and outies. Innies write to understand themselves, and outies reach out and try to understand the world apart from them. Both can be fruitful missions, though i am an outie. There is absolutely nothing in my life i find interesting enough to write about.

And now? He don’t got no bitches. There’s a lesson there

@default_friend Sleep training? Lol. Yup, that’s the reason. Who the hell in Gen X was co-sleeping with their parents? Unless you were raised in a commune.

Or they're over-diagnosed. I don't think people realize how fucked up everyone has always been, in perpetuity. We BOTH over-diagnose and over-medicalize. Medicine has been consumerized.
And there's still stigma! Both around high-functioning issues and the harder-to-handle conditions like psychotic disorders.
The tricky thing is, none of that means medications or psychiatry as a whole can't be helpful. SSRIs have probably done more net good than bad. Plenty of people benefit enormously from having a diagnosis. But yes, it's also a lot easier to use them as a crutch.
When these discussions come up, I'm frequently reminded of an old friend, who had all sorts of problems but she also had a bad diet, drank to excess, purposely did things she knew upset her, didn't so much as take walks around her own neighborhood, and lived in an apartment with no windows (seriously). You want to be supportive, but you can't help sounding like a schoolmarm around people like that.
The danger as I see it now — unlike when I was in in my late teens and early 20s, which was a free-for-all that people are still litigating, the way some people are still litigating the culture wars of the Bush era — is that the "contrarian" position has itself become a market. An extremely lucrative one.
You won't see more people having come-to-Jesus moments, literally or figuratively, where they lead healthier lives. What it actually does is embolden some people toward less empathy rather than more understanding and make people who feel targeted by the messaging hostile.
It's extremely lucrative to cater to and validate the people who really want to believe that all young or sick people are "faking it," that there's no other explanation, that the environment hasn't changed — people have just gotten softer. It's also lucrative to pay lip service to learned helplessness, whether that's through saying "yes baby you're right the world is ending," or predatory "self-help" schemes. What's not a particularly good business model is actual help.
tl;dr: Your 13-year-old is probably just 13. But also, yeah: OCD, anxiety, and depression are real. Real in the sense that they're symptom clusters you can delineate and define in all kinds of ways, but they cause genuine damage and can be alleviated with medicine and therapy and it's actually a wonderful thing we have those tools at our disposal.

anxiety disorders are up 300% from the 1990’s and i don’t think it’s a coincidence that that was the generation that was sleep trained and prohibited from cosleeping

@Super70sSports Second this. And INXS. Sad to see they didn't get in.

@normanbuntzhsb @OliLondonTV Who gives a shit? Hetero sexual men are not her audience, duh.
English

@OliLondonTV This has zero appeal to real men. I’m sure it’s hot for metro-sexuals, queers and any other degenerate, abnormal, mentally ill gender benders, but no straight, normal man can watch even this short clip and find any attraction in it.
