Waarom uitgerekend Pakistan de onderhandelingen leidt tussen Iran en VS/Golf? Hier korte uitleg: Pakistan heeft goede relaties met Sjiitisch Iran (Iran was eerste land dat Pakistan erkende in 1947) en traditioneel ook uitstekende relaties met het Soennitische Saudi-Arabië, de hoeder van de twee heilige moskeeën. S. Arabie en Pakistan hebben vorig jaar nog een strategisch defensiepact gesloten met elkaar. Pakistan zelf is vooral Soennitisch maar heeft tevens 50 miljoen Sjiieten. Deze Sjiitische minderheid is niet gemarginaliseerd, maar juist zeer ontwikkeld en speelt een belangrijke rol in Pakistaanse politiek. De oprichter van Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, was een Sjiiet. Super seculier trouwens. De Bhutto-familie is gemengd Soenni/Sjiitisch. Daarbij zijn Pakistanen noch Arabieren noch Perzen. Komt nog bij dat Pakistan 250 miljoen inwoners heeft en een kernbom. Tel daarbij op dat de huidige Pakistaanse regering en de belangrijke stafchef van het leger goede relaties hebben met Trump (in een poging om het vijandige Afghanistan en India op een afstand te houden). Tevens is Pakistan de belangrijkste bondgenoot van China. Dus als Pakistan spreekt, luistert de regio. Als er dus 1 land deze onderhandelingen kan leiden, is het daarom Pakistan.

Rutte did something many leaders avoid: he corrected the record to Trump’s face, in public, without turning it into a shouting match. He reminded him of the one example nobody can spin away: Afghanistan. Europeans did not just participate, they paid in lives. His point landed because it was factual and moral at the same time. Rutte’s message was basically this: if the US were attacked, Europe would show up, without hesitation, and history already proved it. Then he closed by anchoring it in alliance unity.
