@paulmeadors Think that’s who we lost to also in 1994 SoCal Championship except our game wasn’t as close. They shot like 80% the entire game.

This time in the high school season reminds me of playing in the SoCal D5 championship game in 1989, lost 50-49. Tough one. Shoulda hiked my socks up higher.

I almost didn’t start The Saturday Athlete. Not because I didn’t believe in it. But because I was scared no one would care. I grew up in a middle-class family. I never worried about my next meal — and I’ll forever be grateful for that. But we didn’t have money to casually throw at recruiting services. Or flights. Or hotels. Or “just in case” camps. If a camp started at 10:00am, we were driving up that morning. I didn’t understand it at the time. Why weren’t we staying in hotels like some of the other families? If we did go the night before, it was usually just my dad and me in a lower-end motel. Sleep. Wake up. Compete. Drive home. No complaining. Just sacrifice. I remember one camp specifically. Poorly run. No real college coaches around. No one with authority to recruit. I looked at my dad and said, “We’re never coming back here.” Other camps? Information-filled. Decision-makers present. Exactly where we needed to be. It was a learning curve. One that probably cost our family tens of thousands of dollars over the years. With proper guidance from someone who had been there before... We probably could’ve cut that in half. The idea for The Saturday Athlete came to me in 2022. But I hesitated. What if no one followed? What if no one cared? What if it got no attention? Then I spent two years running NIL. And I realized something: Withholding what I’ve learned… In today’s landscape… Could cost an athlete life-changing money. Not just a scholarship. But the ability to change their family tree. I saw a sophomore sign up for the newsletter and take action within five minutes. Five minutes. That’s why I’ll never quit on this. If I help one athlete a year avoid the mistakes we made… It’s a success. That’s genuinely all I care about. Helping the next generation move faster than we did.
