#albumsthatshapedyourlifetop10 U2 | "Bad" (Live Aid, 1985) When I was a kid I used to think Bono had written this song about his haircut. Years later I discovered it was about heroin addiction and I liked it even more. Here's my fave rendition of it 😍

#albumsthatshapedyourlifetop10 DAY 4 |"The Unforgettable Fire" (1984) By the late 80s my brother was collecting U2's LPs and I was doing the same for INXS. I was secretly envious that his band's deep cuts were far better but I think my bro wished Bono had hair as nice as Hutch.

My posts, for whatever reason, attract an awful lot of wankpuffins, never bothers me in the slightest, partly because I have an army of followers who are the absolute best, wonderful people.

Project Hail Mary ★★★★ "Fist my bump!" Lovely. That’s the word I’d use to describe this film. You would have to be profoundly cynical to walk away disliking it. At its heart, this is a buddy movie centred on two unlikely friends, one of whom struggles with bravery and happens to wear a lot of yellow. Ryan Gosling is outstanding. Few actors could carry so much screen time solo, or nearly solo, while remaining effortlessly likable. That said, the film runs a touch long in places, and a few of the endings could have been more disciplined. Beyond that, Project Hail Mary is a triumph of optimistic, feel-good, and deeply moving science fiction. From the opening frames to the credits, it recaptures the pure magic of cinema, the kind that makes you want to watch it again immediately and share the experience with everyone you love. Most people will walk out skipping and smiling. Emotion flows through every scene. The friendship between and Rocky (because he looks like he's made of rocks) is the true heartbeat of the story, even more than the fate of humanity. Their quiet moments of connection and growing bond are just lovely. The movie also weaves in beautiful musical interludes, from Sandra Hüller’s heartfelt rendition of Harry Styles' "Sign of the Times" to clever Beatles nods, all amplifying the emotional weight of Grace and Rocky’s journey. Visually, it is very impressive. Greig Fraser’s cinematography captures the vastness of space while remaining intimate and human. The effects feel practical, tactile, and alive, a refreshing counterpoint to the CGI overload of so many modern blockbusters. The pacing strikes a perfect balance, letting humour, tension, and heartfelt emotion flow effortlessly, weightless yet grounded. Gosling anchors the film with vulnerability, intelligence, and charm. He makes every triumph, setback, and quiet revelation feel immediate and real. He really is one of our great movie stars. The chemistry with Rocky is so natural that the alien becomes as memorable and lovable as any human co-star. For fans of Interstellar, The Martian, Gravity, or Arrival, this feels both familiar and entirely fresh. It takes the best elements of those films and forges its own identity, a “live-action Pixar movie” where story, character, and emotion soar. The humour never undercuts the stakes, and the emotional beats, sometimes hilarious and sometimes devastating, land with precision. Project Hail Mary reminds us why we go to the movies. It is a multisensory, immersive experience best seen on the biggest screen possible. It will make you laugh, and marvel at friendship, courage, and human and alien ingenuity. This is a soaring, heartwarming, unforgettable sci-fi adventure that deserves to be seen, shared, and cherished. Go see it today.

What is the best sci-fi novel you've read? There are many good ones. Great ones. Not just because he recently passed away, but Hyperion by Dan Simmons has to be up there for everyone who has read it...
