I don't think he avoids this topic much, including the fact HOW OFTEN he refers to raccoon in other games/movies — and it's no way an offense, he has all the reasons to do it.
In this specific moment, I believe he doesn't want Sherry to be drowned in her own painful memories. He knows how exactly that place influenced her, and... being protective as usual.
