The biology of what's actually inside this pen is wilder than the pen itself. Anisakis is a parasitic nematode whose natural life cycle goes: whale stomach → eggs in ocean → krill → fish → back to whale stomach. The worm's entire evolutionary purpose is to reach the inside of a marine mammal's gut. It has zero biological interest in being inside a ballpoint pen. The herbal oil keeps it alive for about 4-5 days. After that, it slows down and dies. You then own a pen with a dead parasite floating in it, which somehow feels worse than the live version. Here's the part that makes this make sense. Japan reports over 1,000 anisakiasis cases per year, roughly 95% of all cases globally. Sushi and sashimi are the primary vectors. If you eat raw fish in Japan, you've almost certainly eaten near one of these. The creator, a hobbyist from Kochi Prefecture whose father was a veterinarian who discovered a new species of tapeworm, grew up around parasites and had anisakiasis himself. The pen costs 950 yen. About $6. For context, if one of these worms gets into your stomach instead of a pen, it tries to burrow through your intestinal wall, fails, gets stuck, and triggers either acute abdominal pain or full anaphylaxis. The medical bill for removal via endoscopy runs several hundred dollars minimum. The entire product is a fishing region's inside joke about the thing that ruins their sashimi. They put it in a pen and charge you $6 to watch it swim.
