@varsha_venkat_ The humoral model of pathology never left medicine, it just hides in plain sight when we use words like balance, imbalance, deficiency, excess etc. It's esp. there in alternative medicine, but also lurks in mainstream discourses as well.

@burner7891 @jatticusbowden @roddreher @megbasham Juan de Mariana famously wrote a book (De rege et regis institutione) arguing that it was lawful for the people to overthrow a tyrant. The Habsburgs actually tried to ban his books. The Catholic Doctrine of rights was a check on Catholic monarchs, not a justification for them.

@burner7891 @jatticusbowden @roddreher @megbasham Meanwhile, Aquinas was the official Angelic Doctor of the Catholic Church. His works were placed on the altar at the Council of Trent next to the Bible. In the other side, Calvin and Luther accused Thomas of making a "paganized" Christianity.

I've spent most of my life as a non-Protestant Christian. I love my Protestant brothers and sisters in Christ, though I think they are profoundly wrong on some important matters. Still, I think what @megbasham says here is obviously true, as a matter of historical fact.
Megan Basham@megbasham

Look, I have and love friends of other faiths, but the United States was built upon a Protestant ethic and outlook. Others have come and contributed to our culture, and I do not deny that. But to claim that America’s founding, its self-understood identity for the vast majority of its existence, had been anything other than Protestant is a lie.

@burner7891 @jatticusbowden @roddreher @megbasham If Protestantism is the sole reason for the Magna Carta's survival, why did the Protestant Stuart Kings try so hard to suppress it, and why did they have to reach back to a document written by a 13th-century Catholic prelate to stop them?

@burner7891 @jatticusbowden @roddreher @megbasham In contrast, Spanish Catholic theologians like Suárez were writing against absolute monarchy at the same time as the Reformation. They argued that political power resides in the people by natural law and is only delegated to the King.

@burner7891 @jatticusbowden @roddreher @megbasham And again, the entire reason this was an issue was that the protestanta elevated kings above the Christian church, removing the primary check on monarchy, which is why the solution was a return to Catholic jurisprudence.
