We echo the call for investment models that centre community leadership, remove unnecessary barriers and protect essential services from political and financial shocks. LGBTQ+ communities have carried the HIV response for decades. Now they need funding that carries them in return
Attended a powerful EJAF moderated panel with AMS, UNAIDS, WHO and VIIV on the future of sustainable HIV funding for LGBTQ+ communities in sub-Saharan Africa. The discussion made it clear that funding cuts are placing essential services and communities at serious risk.
A clear message ran through the panel. LGBTQ+ organisations are adapting again and again to survive an unstable funding landscape, but adaptation cannot replace long term sustainability. Donors need to reimagine funding models that offer flexibility, equity and continuity.
AMS delivered a stark reminder. "Resilience alone cannot sustain health systems." They have been forced to prioritise life saving services, reduce hours and rely on volunteers. They stressed that these adaptations are only temporary without renewed funding.
VIIV shared that the full impact of recent funding cuts remains unknown. They highlighted the importance of existing emergency response funds and stressed the need to invest more internationally in KP led programmes while making application processes less burdensome.
The wave of anti-rights this conferences taking place this summer pose a grave threat to LGBTQ+ rights, but women and sexual and reproductive health rights! Don't let the facade of 'family values' deceive you

And tomorrow, I’ll be delivering my own oral intervention in the ID with the Independent Expert on SOGI, responding to his new report on the displacement of LGBT+ individuals.
This report lays bare the compounded violence queer people face in displacement contexts!
Alongside this, I will be taking part in consultations on the renewal of the SOGI mandate — a vital mechanism to keep the UN accountable to LGBT+ rights. Those discussions continue today and tomorrow.
Checking in from #HRC59, where it’s been a busy and powerful day of LGBT+ and health rights advocacy.
This morning I joined informal consultations on the draft resolution on access to medicines — an issue with real stakes for our communities, especially those living with HIV.
In Cape Town for the @frontlineaids REACh Regional Advocacy meeting, I interviewed my colleague, Nomtika Mjwana, on issues affecting #LGBTIQ+ people in Africa & the impact on access to #HIV services.
Thanks to @ejaf for supporting this work!

Over 1200 human rights defenders will be joining us in the city of Cape Town for the 2024 ILGA World Conference. We are excited for the fruitful conversations that will arise as we co-host on of the biggest convenings of LGBTQI+ activists globally alongside @GenderDynamix!
#ILGA
And as a global partnership with deep roots in both HIV and human rights advocacy, Frontline AIDS knows our role is critical in facing this anti-rights movement. At ILGA World, I’m here to connect, strategize, and learn – let’s gooooooooooo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
So with our access to key spaces like UNAIDS and the Global Fund, we’re calling for substantial international funding to fuel this resistance. We need global actors, governments, and communities to unite, anticipate threats, and push back with proactive, organised resistance
At this ILGA World conference, I’m focusing on the growing anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment sweeping the globe, fueled by well-funded, global anti-rights actors. With the re-election of Trump and some version of Project 2025 on the horizon, the stakes are higher than ever
