@MathiasMarkert Korrekt.

Good morning Japan 🇯🇵 When Johnny Somali visited Japan, his behaviour caused widespread outrage for repeatedly disrespecting local culture and people. He’s now been sentenced to 6 months in South Korea for similar conduct. Do you think Japan should have taken stronger action at the time? What, if any, punishment would have been appropriate for a visitor acting like this?

Immer.

Former Open AI executive says the company is building portals to summon aliens “The truth of this is, we’re building portals from which we’re genuinely summoning aliens. The portals currently exist in the United States and China, and Sam has added one in the Middle East. I think it’s just wildly important to get how scary that should be. It’s the most reckless thing that has been done.” Former OpenAI to the New Yorker

A sad thing happened in Japan An 11-year-old boy named Yuki was reported missing in Kyoto. His stepfather was out on the streets, handing flyers to neighbors, asking for help finding him. This week, that same stepfather was arrested. He has reportedly told police he “lost his temper and strangled” Yuki, then dumped the body in a mountain forest. The boy’s mother, by every account, believed him until the end. This is where most people will stop reading, and this is exactly where the harder conversation should start. Japan has a quiet, persistent problem that rarely makes it into the English-language conversation about this country: children living with stepfathers or their mother’s new partners are overrepresented in serious child abuse cases. In Japan, when child abuse crosses into criminal prosecution, around 72% of offenders are “father figures” — and within that group, over a third are stepfathers, adoptive fathers, or the mother’s live-in boyfriend. Given that stepfamilies make up only around 7% of marriages in Japan, that share is not small. Child welfare data tells a similar story, case after case — sustained beatings, torture, sexual abuse, disposal of bodies. It is not that stepfathers are monsters. Most are not. It is that a country that treats family as a private black box — where divorce still carries stigma, where mothers are often financially cornered into remarrying, where schools and neighbors are trained not to intrude — systematically fails to see the children inside those homes until it is far too late. Yuki’s mother handed out flyers next to the man who now says he killed her son. Japan just began allowing joint custody this month, after decades of delay. But the harder reforms — mandatory home visits, real authority for child welfare workers, serious screening around non-biological caregivers — are still stuck. This is not an abstract policy argument. It is the difference between an 11-year-old going to school next week, and an 11-year-old becoming a headline. Rest in peace, Yuki.

A guy in Bulgaria scammed $1 MILLION out of Spotify Spotify pays around $0.004 every time someone streams a song for at least 30 seconds So he uploaded 467 tracks that were all barely over 30 seconds After this he bought 1,200 Spotify Premium accounts, set them to loop his playlist 24/7 and sat back Those 1,200 bots generated 72 million streams a month, which accounted for over $400,000 in royalties from only $12,000 worth of subscriptions. The playlists were called "Soulful Music" and "Music From The Heart" Both made it into Spotify's global top charts and "Soulful Music" hit number 11 in the US, higher than any major label playlist at the time Meanwhile the whole operation was showing up in Spotify's own weekly revenue reports They sent that data to record labels every single week for months and nobody noticed it The craziest part is none of it was illegal The accounts were paid for with real money, real premium subscribers streamed the songs and every upload had valid copyright When journalists reached out for comment, a Spotify spokesperson refused to even call it a scam He only got caught because he got too successful. Breaking into the top 50 made one major label executive look twice at the charts By the time Spotify deleted the tracks in October 2017, he had already pulled over $1 million in royalties Years later an American named Michael Smith tried to do the same scheme with AI generated music and 10,000 bot accounts He made $10 million in royalties but to make it work he had to buy bulk email addresses, lie directly to Spotify when they flagged him and pay for subscriptions using fake names on corporate debit cards Those lies turned the whole operation into wire fraud The DOJ busted him in 2024, he pleaded guilty and had to return $8 million Same scam, different execution and a small detail changed the entire outcome One guy became rich, the other is waiting for his sentencing
