Context is key my Distinguished brother.
Since I don’t appreciate cyberbullying of any kind and I wish this had been handled better by all concerned, one thing is pertinent here.
My Sister Simi’s statement was triggered by a trending matter about an alleged rape. Ordinarily, there wasn’t any basis for anyone to counter any categorical statement or admonition about ending rape culture. Some of us dedicated our lives to this cause until it was weaponized by certain groups as a means to hack down targeted prominent individuals unjustifiably years before now. But I digress…
A counter came in the context of the case in point (what about false accusers?) subtly cautioning her about over generalization and admonishing restraint pending the revelation of the facts on the trending matter but this was lost in communication and she retorted doubling down on her focus and eventually quoted a post with “Stfu.”
Unfortunately, the matter unraveled and it turned out that the lady in the trending matter actually fabricated the story and none of the allegations were true (as per sources). There was another related matter around the event at a university, which also turned out to be another false accusation, though followed by a confession (which is currently receiving legal attention).
This could have ended here if the context was understood but it got exacerbated by sundry piling and the thirst for ‘blood’ understandably because of the celebrity involvement, prevailing toxic men Vs Women debacle and the monetization implications on protracted online conflicts. It got worse with the revelation of Simi’s past posts which some took seriously because of a precedent (see Ezra’s case as weaponized by feminists).
So you can see the complexity of the matter as it degenerates further. Òrò pèlé, óun y’öbì ní àpò. This shouldn’t have gone this far and I plead that we allow peace to reign without further finger-pointing. She was triggered by a subject she is passionate about at a time when false accusations were being clamped down upon ‘glocally’ thereby finding herself in people’s crosshairs while some drag her husband into the mix.
I must reiterate that it is not in her character to be condescending to the best of my knowledge from our past engagements and she had on occasions apologized for things she wasn’t even guilty of. So this has nothing to do with pride or ego. She will go to any length to be kind to people and definitely her fans.
Celebrities are humans, infallible, full of frailties, and when they do err, we must kindly find it in our hearts to forgive them. A lot was happening and many things got lost in communication.
