For the next Mt Hood Challenge Diabetes Simulation Modeling Conference (which is kicking off this time next week in Malmo Sweden): mthooddiabeteschallenge.com) we commissioned @art_bypaiano to produce an art work. More academia needs to be inspired by art!

Worth watching 1964 Documentary on Surgeon General's Smoking Report that paved the way for anti-smoking initatives of the past few decades. Sen Thurston Morton questioning the stats at about 50 minute mark has not aged well... youtu.be/LxMxHQOSN_Q via @YouTube

Ahead of its time? @OHENews 1964 report highlights that "effect of sound nutrition upon physical and mental health is seldom considered. If it were, the health authorities would have to launch an allout attack on the food industry and on methods of production and processing..."

Interesting interlectual "genealogy" website mapping a family tree of knowledge via PhD students & their supervisors . It includes quite a few health economists. Academia is such a tangled web. mathgenealogy.org/id.php?id=2422…

The "No" is little like the man in the crowd from "Life of Brian" You're all individuals! Crowd: Yes! We're all individuals! Brian: You're all different! Crowd: Yes, we are all different! Man in crowd: I'm not... Crowd: Shhh!

@petesivey Interesting question of what rate we should use to index the cost per QALY threshold?

I've always thought it's hard to define "healthcare inflation" meaningfully. Healthcare is very labour-intensive so most of the cost of an additional unit (eg another consultation or operation) is directly proportional to the pay rates of doctors/nurses.
Marcus Chown@marcuschown

Healthcare inflation is estimated to be ~4% (increasing population, people living longer, iller for longer, increasing drug cost etc). So average annual increases in NHS budget every year since 2010 has been a real-term cut.

@Tube_of_Sand @C__Kronenberg It's a big of a "market for lemons" as very hard for the customers (policymakers) to assess quality of research, so they will accept low quality with lots of buzzwords etc.
