@Kon__K How difficult would it be to put the name of your beautiful mother before yours @Kon__K on this book? So is it your book or ours? The crusade for women’s rights starts with men letting go of their ego.

First it was factory workers. Now it will be those in advertising, finance, admin staff and a lot more. (My Fin Review Oped in this thread) Globalisation in the ’80s and ’90s gutted industrial jobs, but Australia weathered the storm better than most, thanks to the reformist leadership of the Hawke and Keating governments, yes. Howard as well. Now, AI threatens to do the same to white-collar professionals. This time the disruption will impact people who were told they were safe, the university-educated, the upwardly mobile, the heart of the knowledge economy. Australia avoided the populist backlash that engulfed the US and UK. We did it once. We must do it again.

I could name at least 500 other minority groups around the world facing daily persecution, oppression, and in many cases, what could rightfully be described as genocide. Unfortunately, for many, social justice activism begins and ends with Palestine. This exclusive and selective focus borders on selective discrimination, which can itself take on anti-Semitic dimensions.

No wonder this version of progressive politics went backwards on May 3rd. Iran’s human rights abuse towards ethnic groups. Including genocide. 1. Kurds •Face discrimination in language rights, political expression, and cultural autonomy. •Many Kurds are also Sunni Muslims, which compounds repression. •Kurdish political activists are frequently imprisoned or executed on national security charges. •Ongoing military crackdowns have occurred in Kurdish-majority areas, especially following periods of protest. 2. Baloch •Primarily Sunni Muslims located in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan. •Among Iran’s poorest and most underdeveloped regions, with high unemployment and poor infrastructure. •Accused of “separatism” and regularly targeted in security operations. •Extrajudicial killings and executions of Baloch activists are common. •The regime uses anti-drug operations as a cover for militarised control of the province. 3. Ahwazi Arabs •Indigenous to the Khuzestan province in Iran’s southwest. •Face discrimination in education, housing, and employment. •The region is resource-rich (especially oil), yet the Arab population suffers from high poverty and state neglect. •Arabic language and cultural expression are restricted. •Ahwazi activists are often accused of terrorism and sentenced to death. 4. Azeris •Iran’s largest ethnic minority, predominantly Shi’a and culturally Turkic. •While less persecuted than others, Azeris face cultural and linguistic suppression, including bans on Turkic-language education. •Protests over identity and language rights are routinely cracked down on. 5. Baháʼís •Iran’s largest non-Muslim religious minority, considered heretical by the regime. •Subject to intense persecution since 1979: banned from universities and government jobs, homes and cemeteries destroyed, leaders imprisoned. •Baháʼís are denied the right to practice their faith openly and are frequently targeted in state media campaigns. 6. Christians (esp. Converts from Islam) •Recognised Armenian and Assyrian Christian minorities have limited religious rights. Subjected to massive human rights abuse and murder. •Muslim converts to Christianity, however, are viewed as apostates and often imprisoned or worse. •Church raids and the detention of pastors are common. 7. Gays and Lesbians. I have left the worse to last. LGBTQ+ individuals in Iran, particularly gay men, lesbians, and transgender people, face severe, state-sanctioned persecution under the Islamic Republic. Their existence is not merely marginalised; it is criminalised and pathologised by law, religious doctrine, and social enforcement. Legal Status & Punishment •Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Iran and punishable by lashes, imprisonment, and even execution under the Islamic Penal Code. •Gay men face the harshest penalties, including the death penalty (especially for repeat offenses or ‘sodomy’). •Lesbians may receive lashes or imprisonment, though sentences often result in lengthy imprisonment. •There is no legal recognition or protection for LGBTQ+ people in any form, no anti-discrimination laws, no civil rights frameworks, and no safe reporting mechanisms for abuse. Enforcement & State Violence •The Iranian regime uses morality police, surveillance, entrapment, and digital monitoring to target LGBTQ+ individuals. •There are documented cases of torture, rape, and coerced confessions during detentions. •Families often cooperate with the state, leading to forced disappearances, honour killings, and suicides. Give me a break…

I struggle to believe this comment comes from a place of genuine reflection rather than regret or projection. Statements like these, while perhaps well-intentioned, are reductive and myopic. Every violent man was born of a woman—raised, socialised, and shaped within a society composed of both men and women. To frame male violence as solely the responsibility of men, while ignoring the broader social and cultural systems that enable it, oversimplifies a complex issue. Yes, men must be held accountable. But real change demands a whole-of-society approach. It requires us all—regardless of gender—to challenge the structures, norms, and attitudes that sustain gender-based violence. Responsibility doesn’t lie with one group alone, but with all of us, collectively. Only then can we create a culture that truly respects and protects women. I know you can do better Kon.

Male violence against women Is the responsibility of violent men Is the responsibility of all men As men we’re responsible for calling out violence of other men, holding them accountable & modelling behaviour & attitudes that respect women It’s not the responsibility of women

@KosSamaras Seriously most small businesses are exempt from payroll tax This difference is negligible. Local and State governments need to reduce in size and outsource with a view to firing up small businesses.

A strategically smart policy shift by the Victorian Labor government. Small business owners have, in many ways, become the new working class, now concentrated in large numbers across Melbourne’s outer suburbs and regional centres.

So much of identity politics today seems fixated on treating a small segment of society as if it were the whole, rather than seeing itself as one part of a broader human community and common good.

3 women (allegedly) murdered in 3 days in Australia. If more bloody men spent less time trying to blame any man that doesn’t look like them, stop wallowing in #NotAllMen & #whataboutism & being bystanders while doing F all to help men in need too maybe we’d have a way to end this

Seriously @Kon__K this narrow, one-dimensional perspective—one that overlooks sex and disregards how it intersects with class, cultural & social norms, ethnicity, etc—ultimately reinforces the very violence against women that we aim to dismantle. Is this you writing this or someone else? You can do better than this Kon.

127 women have been killed in Australia in past 16 months, vast majority murdered by men. The core theme in the epidemic of violence against women is not race/class/religion, it is gender, it’s men who hold onto rigid gender stereotypes & seek to control women & value aggression.

@Kon__K Because the Greens won’t condemn the October 7 attacks, they should be disqualified. Any refusal to denounce violence and acts of terror is, in my view, grounds for immediate disqualification.

This is exactly why we’re in this mess. The identity wars are conflating different categories bringing about unnecessary confusion. Just look at how ethnicity is conflated with these broad social constructs, e.g., black, white, brown, etc that tout race as if it’s a plural concept.

"In general, every time I hear the word “gender,” I’m not sure what the other person is talking about. Are they talking about gender identity, gender normativity, gender expression, or sex? This is to say that clarity is helpful for communication, and one big step in that direction is having a definition."

literal fake news over at @abcnews
Bernard Lane@Bernard_Lane

"Why puberty blockers do no harm" Australia's public broadcaster, the ABC, has just published this. @abcnews So, who is the author? A paediatrician, an endocrinologist? It is a doctor, Dr Rach Cosker-Rowland. At the foot of the article, the ABC describes Dr Rach as an Associate Professor in Moral and Political Philosophy at the University of Leeds. Yes, in the UK, where the Labour Health Secretary Wes Streeting has imposed an indefinite ban on private prescribing of puberty blockers for gender-distressed kids. Where the distinguished paediatrician Dame Hilary Cass presided over the world's most comprehensive review of youth gender medicine and found plenty of reasons to be concerned about the use of puberty blockers. Set against this, what is the expertise & standpoint of Dr Rach? ABC readers are not told that Dr Rach is a director of the company Trans Pride Leeds CIC. Should readers be told if Dr Rach is also trans activist? Should parents act on this advice, ignore all the warnings & put their distressed kids on blockers? "Why puberty blockers do no harm" How could any responsible editor publish such an article? Links etc in tweet below.

@Kon__K Great question! There’s a lot of things they haven’t talked about. Do you have any stats on the demographics of those committing violence? This would at least allow us to develop interventions with much greater accuracy.
