Many of us may never have seen a Madras Hedgehog, Striped Hyena, Lion-tailed Macaque, or Hump-headed Mahseer. Yet, these unseen and often forgotten species are critical sentinels of our biodiversity and ecology. Silent, elusive, and vanishing , they remind us of the fragile balance of nature. At TN Forest Department we have set up a dedicated Endangered Species Conservation Fund to protect them as announced by the Government of Tamil Nadu. This fund will restore habitats, enable vital scientific research, and bring local communities into the heart of conservation efforts. Today, we turn a new chapter in Tamil Nadu’s conservation journey, safeguarding the lesser-known yet ecologically critical species of our forests and rivers. The Lion-Tailed Macaque, Madras Hedgehog, Striped Hyena, and Hump-Headed Mahseer will now receive focused protection under a pioneering and one of its kind dedicated programme. As announced earlier this year, the Government of Tamil Nadu has issued orders rolling out this initiative at a cost of ₹1 crore. The funds will be used for habitat monitoring, canopy bridges, in-situ breeding, ecological restoration, and community awareness campaigns.
