One of the most rewarding parts of being on the ground in Benghazi, Libya, is getting to meet the different units that took it to our terrorists and won. For those who are unaware, the Libyan National Army, working alongside special forces, police and intelligence units, captured and/or killed over 60 of the terrorists involved in the attacks against us during the course of September 11th and 12th, 2012. While there is still much to be done in pursuit of justice against those responsible in honor of our fallen brothers, we are grateful for the opportunity to meet those who were directly involved in the broader pursuit of those involved. There is a common misconception in the West that only we fight terrorists. That view is completely detached from reality. The fight has always been shared, often carried out by partners on the ground who pay a very real and heavy price, long before and long after the headlines fade. There is always value in sitting across from the people who carried that burden, hearing their perspective, and understanding the reality of what came after. We learned a lot from them, and we hope we were able to pass back some knowledge regarding the evolving intentions and planning of our terrorists, especially as they have reestablished their safe haven back in Afghanistan, which will have major ripple effects not just for that region, but for North Africa and the West, particularly the U.S. homeland.
